Trump Threatens GM With Big Border Tax For Cruze Production In Mexico
President-elect Donald Trump today blasted General Motors and threatened to impose a "big border tax" for making its Chevy Cruze model in Mexico. However, the automaker reiterated at Cruzes built there will mostly go to the domestic market and that it will continue to build the compact in the U.S.

"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A. or pay big border tax!" Trump said in a post this morning on Twitter.

The quid pro quo is simple. Mexico can make the tax go away if it does something about the porosity of its border with the USA and use their military against the drug cartel. Mexico make a lot of money due to NAFTA, but it shirks its responsibility as a neighbor nation to give something back for what they get.

"Mexico can make the tax go away if it does something about the porosity of its border with the USA and use their military against the drug cartel." - Seriously ??

Mexico as well as the US have already lost the war against the drug cartels, they just can't admit it yet.

The drug cartel at the border could be eradicated with a MILITARY intervention rather than the DEA.

I saw a movie called "Outsourced" in which a US phone-order company outsources their call center to India. During one order at the Indian call-center, a (patriotic) American is about to buy an American Eagle statue ($79), and he asks the female call-taker where she's located. She volunteers Delhi, India.

The American customer expresses how he hates American jobs going to foreigners. Indian call-taker is sympathetic, "I understand, sir."

American customer asks where the statue is made. Indian call-taker volunteers China. American customer expresses his disdain for American manufacturing jobs going to foreigners.

Indian call taker says "Sir, I completely understand. I can recommend an alternative product. It is an extremely similar American Eagle statue. I know that is it manufactured in the United States. It is also sold and shipped by a company located in the USA. It is 100% American." The customer asks "For the same price?" Indian call-taker lady says "Unfortunately no, sir. It is $199, plus shipping."

Silence. The camera is on the Indian call-taker's face for a seemingly long time. Eventually she says, "Yes sir. I understand, sir. I will ship our product to you with the utmost urgency, at a total cost of $79, shipping included. You should receive it within a week. Thank you for your patronage, sir."

I am reminded of this movie whenever we complain about American jobs going to foreigners, or rattle our swords regarding doing something about it.

I wonder if Trump will forego the tax if GM includes a Made in China Trump TIE with every Cruze - - Or will he put that TAX in his out of country sourced goods as well! SURE!

Even before taking office, Trump already has the most brain farts among world leaders. The problem is there is not much in that brain of his, and as such his brain farts will fade just as quickly.

People don't fact-check what he says anymore. If I bet against whatever he says, I'll come out on top.

I agree
Gm's problem is that their inventory of the Cruze in the USA is too large - so they did the responsible thing by cutting production. In the past - they were criticized by not cutting production - instead they would offer big discounts. That was counter productive - it reduced the value of the car for trade ins as well.
GM never proposed to permanently cut off the third shift - and they did not close the plant entirely either. It will be producing - if DOnald Trump wants to help -have him offer incentives for buying American - he doesn't need those billions he says he had (Yes - I mean him personally)

TomM;

In my understanding of the Bill of Rights and all of its amendments it is very clear that the forefathers that fought and died to create the great country of the USA thought it very paramount to protect ones right to property. Property can be defined in many ways and was left very broad in the bill of rights for a reason by the men who wrote it. To me a man's/woman's earnings through servitude, investment, inheritance and any other means is still their property. Do you believe in the protection of ones property or do you believe that what our forefathers fought and died for is not important?? If you do not love the Constitution and the Freedoms and protections granted to the Citizen (rich or poor) then you should go to a country that does not have these rights and protections and live there. Donald Trump's income and wealth from his prudent investments are his property and protected by the Constitution. There for no liberal mined socialist can redistribute his wealth because they are jealous of it.
