Would You Lay Down The Cash For An All Electric GTI?
The GTI soup has been simmering for over 40 years, in which time it has been garnished with luxury flavors and turbo spices. However, the hot hatch might not be able to outrun the EV trend.

The German automaker has already tried to add electricity to the GTI, creating the Golf GTE. They've even tested it as a wagon, although a production model was never approved. Now, Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, Jurgen Stackmann, says an electric GTI could fit the company's portfolio in the not too distant future, adding that "clearly GTI fits with EVs, though."

Saying VW and electric in the same sentence scares me. #QualityCrapstorm

VW has problems with gas engine reliability - and they would not be making the electric motors - so that might be a plus. Still - the GTI is too small for me.

GTI too small? If your 6'5" theres still space on the roof for your head. Im 6'1" and the car is VERY comfortable. Best ergonomics pretty much in the class. MY 2007 I was able to fit 4 people my height in the car fairly comfortably. The car is practically a Tardis.

Sorry - But I am taller than that - and my head is not removable for storing elsewhere. Apparently you can do something none of the rest of us HUMANS are NOT able to do. I do not consider the car to be comfortable for me - nor can I actually put a person with legs in the seat behind me in the Golf. And at my age - I can afford a bigger car - the GTI is too small for me. IF it is OKAY for you - that's fine.

Speaking from experience, I have a Golf 2.5 and I am 6'8-6'9. 38'' inseam.

I find there's plenty of room in all directions and there is room for someone up to 5'8-5'10 to fit behind me.

Height is relative. It all depends on how your torso is laid out - whether a person even shorter than me can get comfortable in a GTI. As far as the guy behind me - with the Front Drivers seat all the way back and tilted as well - a thin child might be comfortable - but a true adult will likely not fit. Again - if it is OKAY for YOU - that is fine. It is NOT okay for me. I have a special consideration - I was in an accident - a car hit me (I was walking on the street) and pushed me into a Heavy Plate Glass Display of a Department store - if the glass had not broken - I would have been killed - but I still needed Hip and Knee replacement - and have Pins in my ankle and shoulder - which means I cannot bend my right leg as much as most people. This happened years ago - and It no longer affects me that much otherwise so it would be hard to tell if you saw me. So- you may be able to sit in the GTI - but I cannot easily sit in a lot of small cars - the GTI included. In fact - I can sit better in many exotic sports cars where you are basically layed out - BUT I have a problem getting INTO the car to do that.

I did not say that the GTI was too small - I said it was "too small for me" - look above. Certainly most people would try out their driving position and see if it can be comfortable for them - and some Tall people can fit into a GTI and other CANNOT - and the word "COMFORTABLY" has different meaning to different people. I guess I will just have to be stuck with my S600 for a while longer.

I would have to believe that because of increased scrutiny - that VW would likely be the LAST car manufacturer to attempt another "cheat". I also believe that all Diesels will be scrutinized to the point that such a "fix" would no longer be possible. Still - as long as Petrol is so expensive in Europe (2-3 times the US price) - Diesel and Electric will be the choice for the average person - and Diesel will continue for a while as well.

Gas is quickly becoming the underdog. Samsung has a 2021 battery in the works that they claim can go over 300 miles on an 80% 20-minute charge. Tesla/Panasonic will probably have something similar, sooner.

While eventually - I would guess that there will be batteries available that can charge quickly - and partial charges will not affect badly - that is NOT the case now - and I doubt will be the case in 2021 as well. (Samsung may actually test such a battery - but I doubt it will be available and affordable for some time afterwards). Unless some new type of battery is available - even Tesla and Panasonic will not be producing anything like that in 2021. However - until the charging time is reduced to 10 minutes or less - it won't make a difference for me - that will likely happen after I have died.

I would hope that advances come in SOLAR panels(on the car) that could eventually be used to maintain a charge in an Electric car - that would be the true innovation that would change things. However - that would cause a major economic upheaval around the world too.
