Asian Luxury Brands Scramble To Catch Up With The Germans On EV Options
German automakers made waves at last fall's Paris auto show with plans to chase Tesla with their own electric luxury cars. Now, the Asian brands are considering the move.

Lexus, Genesis, Acura and Infiniti say they are weighing electric vehicle offerings -- in some cases to meet emissions rules, in others because zippy, futuristic EV cachet enhances their luxury buzz.

There remains a limited market for high end Electric Vehicles. Tesla almost always misses its sales targets for instance. AND those cars are priced below what they would need to be to sustain Tesla. If you were to put a bunch of competitors in the marketplace - the individual share today would not be much. However - some European countries and Cities are mandating no ICE driven vehicles in the future - and no manufacturer can afford to leave out the volume markets.

It will take a major increase in the price of Diesel fuel (Gas is already high) to force people over to EVs in Europe - and an increase in the price of all fuels in the USA. Supplys is currently more than adequate - and with more older cars coming off the road and being replaced by car that get better mileage - demand has remained sort of steady. Good luck selling all those EVs - and if you ONLY sell EVs - you are in trouble.

The i3 sells well in Europe.
It's in N.A. that it struggles.
Tesla is proving to be a success worldwide.
I believe there are only 3 BEV German cars, the i3, the eGolf, and the B250e (did I miss any?). As for the new BEV models, they won't hit the showrooms for another 2 to 5 years. Everything else right now are PHEVs.
So I suppose the Japanese don't have much catching up to do really.
