Talkin' Smack: What's YOUR Reaction To The German Chancellor Telling Trump That The USA Should Build Better Cars?

German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel hit back against Donald Trump‘s threat to place a massive tariff on German cars entering the United States, responding that the U.S. should just make better cars instead.

“If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax,” Trump told the German newspaper Bild. Trump suggested that Germany was already treating the American automakers unfairly, noting the lack of Chevrolet in the country.

First, I'd ask everyone else in the room if America is known for building quality cars. Then I'd just nod politely and shut up.

Re the proposed tariff itself: Protectionism is the road to isolationism.

For a large part of my driving life, I bought American cars with the foolish notion that I was supporting "Made In USA" label. What I ended up with was a whole bunch of crappy cars - Buick, Ford T-Bird, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Corvette. Since I made a switch for foreign cars 11 years ago, my driving experience has been much improved.

Barring compelling offerings from other automakers, my future car purchases will be Tesla - the true "Made In USA" product with 21st century thinking and technology.

He is not event on the White House chair and we already have issues ,OH my God , this arrogance way could create a lot of problems.
Vice German Chancellor is right American need to build better cars , the quality is still low , they improving but need more, as I know MB and BMW already has theirs Plants where they built SUV for all over the World , and is ok so now Trump want more plants of different models. They have the right to do what they want . Trump also mentions that he doesn't. See to much Chevrolet there is obvious the reason everybody know why i don't need to tell why.

Given that American cars are generally more reliable than German cars, we already do.

Given that American cars are generally a lot cheaper to repair than German cars, we already do.

The South Koreans and the Japanese also build better cars than the Germans.

Given that American Fords and German Fords are virtually identical, we already do.

Given that Chevys have a massive amount of commonality under the skin we already do.

The German response is purely xenophobic, shows their arrogance, and makes them look dictatorial and foolish.

The "build better cars" line is protectionist blustering and the fool doesn't realize Trump has already won.

And *my* perspective is that Trump's threat to impose tariffs on German cars is xenophobic, and you could even say it shows his arrogance and makes him look dictatorial and foolish.

I guess it depends on who you ask what they saw, right?

@TheSteve, you clearly are incapable of understanding a tactical argument which is what Trump is doing masterfully.

MDarringer: I understand Trump's tactics will be tremendous. The best. You'll see. People said so. Only he knows how to use them. His will be better tactics that anybody else's. Trump's tactics are so amazing, only Trump knows them. Only he can do them. He doesn't want to tell you his tactics so the Germans don't use them. They'll be huge!

One of the German Ministers recently purchased a Tesla Model S--the best part is he used public funds to do it. Oops.

Fix the headline. It was not the German Chancellor (aka Angela Merkel) who made the comment.

I don't know how tactical and masterful Mr. Trump really is. I do know that he seems rather "thin skinned". Further as long as he has and acts out on his stupid twitter account the USA cold be in for a bit of a rough ride. He could very well start a tariff war. That will not help the USA.
