Kia Specs Out Stinger Sport Sedan In Europe - Base Models Start With 200 to 250HP

Shortly after its presentation at the Detroit Auto Show, Kia has confirmed European specifications for its new Stinger sports sedan.

The big news here is the addition of a diesel powertrain on top of the two petrol units shared with the North American specification model.

The entry-level engine is a 2.2-liter turbodiesel capable of delivering 200PS (197hp) at 3,800 rpm and peak torque of 440Nm (325 lb-ft) available between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. With the diesel, the 2017 Stinger accelerates from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 8.5 sec and tops out at 225km/h (139mph).

Gee - it is almost 2 seconds slower than the Buick LaCrosse. So much for Sports Sedan

The diesel is slower like most diesels. However, comparing apples to apples, the twin turbo 3.3L V6 version of the Stinger does 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds. That's about 1 second faster than the grampmobile Lacrosse. Not to mention the Stinger has a top speed of 167 mph. What's the grampmobile Lacrosse's top speed, 145 mph???

It's definitely an aggressive looking design. The 3.3-liter turbo V6 seems like fun...especially with AWD. And if you've ever driven a Kia, their gearing settings lend to some really surprisingly good low-end acceleration.

I guess the Stinger would be nice for Kia fans that have "outgrown" the Optima pseudo-sports car design. Also interesting that the Stinger will come as the Chevy SS bows out of production. Though the SS's V6 was on another level of performance vs the Stinger's Turbo V6, they both are fun family sedans that offer a certain level of driving excitement.
