GM Canada Gets A NAFTA Surprise And Loses Over 600 Jobs To Mexico

Unifor Local 88 spokesman Mike Van Boekel said the layoffs will take effect in July at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, which currently employs 2,800 Unifor workers.

It was never a surprise to Canada. Shortly after NAFTA was signed, US-owned Canadian-located auto plants began to shut down. Canadian wages just can't compete against the Mexican's, even when you factor in Canadian tax-breaks to attract and retain the presence of American companies in Canada. It's a fact of life.

Talk with Canadians and ask them what benefits they experienced from NAFTA. Mind you if you talk to Canadian politicians, they know all the answers and why it was a great idea for them.

Free trade has worked well for both Canada and the US as they are each others biggest trading partners although this will change unfavorably to Canada's determent as more car plants shut down and move south. NAFTA or specifically Mexico was the demise to both countries and have created an unfair playing field and large trade deficits.

Canada is slipping into socialism with Premier "Muhammad Trudeau" and will be gutted with our stupid Carbon Tax modeled after California. Worst yet for Ontario is that they have gone from the cheapest electricity rates in NA to the most expensive since the asshole liberal party took over. Regardless of the billions that Canada subsidizes the auto plants here, the cost of electricity and carbon tax alone will be the demise of Canadian manufacturing period. Then there will be massive trade deficits with the US as it will be too costly to produce anything here.

We are hopelessly screwed with endless brain dead politicians more interested in Muslim immigration so we can be slowly convert over to sharia law to appease them and win more liberal votes. We need a Trump before we become Canuckistan. I am seriously thinking about jumping across the pond to Michigan and moving my company as well as there is less reasons for me to stay in the most indebted sub-government jurisdiction in the world (Ontario $315B and counting).
