VW's Audi looks to close U.S. pricing gap

They have come far with their product line over the years and there brand has become much closer to a household name than in years past. This seems like the obvious next step.

And getting a loaner for a BMW is any easier? Our BMW store services nearly 200 BMW's a day but they only have 35 BMW service loaners. What does that mean? Your usually going to get a standard Hertz loaner. They save the BMW fleet for the really "HOT" customer service problems.

Munic - audi didn't exist till the early 80's in the USA and the fact they have come this far (even with the 60 min ripoff) is amaizing

The price of a car has nothing to do with the quality but it is nice to see that Audi is doing better that they can do this. Most Audi's you get today are more to lease then a BMW or MB/ Audi loves the 3.0 money factor on a lot of their new models. Gone are the free money leaese that is for sure. Right now BMW and MB are spending lots of $$$ to keep the volume up.

Thanks Munichrob for your realistic post. I never considered Audi a rival of BMW or Mercedes. My parents never considered a Audi as a choice in the 80's or 90's. Now that Audi marketing campiagn in the late 90's to move up market to compete with BMW and MB, an Audi is a upmarket VW, something you buy if you can't afford a BMW, or MB, or Jaguar. The Audi; 80,90,100,4000, 5000, a4, a3, a2, a6, TT, Q7 shitty cars.

It's funny, because I could've bought a $65K M3.

But I didn't.

Instead, I bought a $65K S4.

I know, a re-badged VW, whatever.

BMWs are for yuppies. Everyone knows that. Audis, especially S/RS Audis, have one of the best images in the luxury car business- especially in Europe. They're seen as cars for people who have taste.

And... can't afford a Jaguar? I'm test-driving the E350 4Matic, 530xi, and... the Jaguar XJ8, for my wife on Saturday. She's in love with the XJ8 and she'll be getting her new car in January, and I have no trouble plunking down $70K for a car.

Not sure why you make sweeping statements like that. I have 4 cars, including a brand new Porsche Carrera yet I chose and Audi for my sedan over the BMW and MB.

Larry, The A8 is a $1400 dollar payment
the s6 is a 1800 dollar payment
the A6 is more then the 5 series or the E class on a lease

The A4 is not a cheep payment the base base car is not bad but most 4s are 5 to 6 a month

Why buy an A4 now? Price. I can get a well equipped a4 2.0t for around 36k. A similar 328i is 39k. But with the 328i I get 230 hp vs 200hp. Audi must increase HP the same time as price otherwise they will lose potential customers to rivals.

I am still torn between the a4 and 328 right now. I prefer the look of the a4, but I can't step out of my 330i to a slower car.

Logical - with more class and reserved money than to be attached to the propeller brand "image" of yuppy or estate agent.

What negative image is associated with Audi that is prevalent throughout the world? Please don't respond with loserville because that is your interpretation.

Whatever the sense or class, the money is there to buy a BMW if the buyer so desires in many cases.

That's hilarious because the RS4 has a waitlist on it and can't be had for under MSRP. It's also more than the BMW M3 by 11K.

The Audi A6 4.2 S-line fully-loaded is more than a 550i fully-loaded.

The A8L 6.0 W12 starts more than the 760Li and also costs more fully-loaded.

The R8, if indeed $130,000, goes well beyond anything BMW sells in terms of base price.

I'm going to tell you that most of those extra BMW buyers are a product of BMWs unfortunate image and as a result they don't have a damn clue about what model they drive, how much horsepower their car has, what it's 0-60 time is or what other models are in the same class.

The trend of Audi increasing its prices, as you have seen, will only continue.

How about this comparison. Audi A3 will be MORE expensive than the BMW 1-series when the 1-series comes to the States.

Audi A8L 6.0 W12 is more expensive than a BMW 760Li. No S-line or RS model there.

Audi R8 will be MORE expensive if the $130,000 price tag that has been going around is true.

Also what is the A6 S-line Logical? It is an A6 with the same exact engine. There are no performance enhancements once so ever on the S-line models. Therefore it is strictly cosmetic. It would valid in that case to compare a an A6 with S-line cosmetic package if you willl, to a BMW 550i with sport package.

Again, we are comparing purely cosmetic enhanced cars with the same engines as their non S-line or sport packaged variants.

The A6 is MORE expensive.

Even if we don't compare Audi RS or S models to regular BMW models, the A3 is more expensive than the 1-series. The A8L 6.0 W12 is MORE expensive than the 760Li and latly the R8 will be more expensive than any M6 cabriolet.

The A6 4.2 S-line is MORE expensive fully-loaded rather when compared to the 550i.
