If Trump Taxes Imports Are You Going To Pony Up The Cash OR Buy American?

Prices for new cars and trucks, being pushed ever higher by fuel economy improvements, safety equipment and advanced technology, could soar out of range for many buyers with the addition of an import tax to the equation.

Among the vehicles hit hardest would be entry-level nameplates that automakers rely on as gateways for new customers but say they can't make profitably in the U.S.

President Donald Trump and House Republicans have floated the idea of taxing vehicles and other goods that enter the nation's borders, while providing more favorable tax treatment to exports. Such a tax would have drastic effects on the auto industry, raising prices not only on Nissan Versas, Ford Fusions and crew-cab Chevrolet Silverados assembled in Mexico, but also on many of the imported components that U.S. plants use.

Assuming this happens--and I don't necessarily think it will--people will continue to buy what they can afford.

Will continue to buy the vehicle I prefer with my money, even if it cost more, as everyone should.

People buy cars that meet their budget requirements. Generally they have the choice of a bunch of options. If one or two options no longer make the list - that won't change much. No one should spend on a car that they cannot afford - countguy.

I would definitely consider Lincoln and Buick next time I'm shopping around.

NOT going to happen. You can't operate protectionism in the world of globalization...if so...the first American company to get hit would be Boeing.

Free trade = Competition, better product, and more innovation.

Protectionism = Laziness, less innovation, and responsive tariffs

Chalk me up as a free trader.

The south of boarder vehicles are not on my shopping list so it should not be an impact to me. TV prices may impact a wider audience.

It won't change my decision since I'm already planning for my next two car purchases to be Teslas, 100% built in the US and more American than most cars GM, Ford, or Chevy make.

That being said, I believe in free trade and think Trumps plan has a good chance of backfiring. Foreign countries will simply raise their tariffs as well, US companies will sell less oversees, jobs will be lost, US companies will start charging more. If competition is reduced in the US, that also means higher prices. Any way you slice it, consumers will be the biggest losers here.

Trabants are not made in Mexico so I am safe for now beside plastic body, 2 cycle motor last forever with classic styling...

Trump should tax the shit out of Asian imports (cars made in Asia not Asian cars made in Murica) that's only fair as that is what they do to you'uns (Pennsylvanian slang) on ANY imports yet we give the fuckers "most favored nation" 2% import tax status -WTF? How much is a import taxed in Asia 10-100%? Trump is calling BS and he is right. North America (Can/US) have been getting prison gang banged for far too long.

The US is big enough of a free market whereby it should dictate terms of fair and balanced trade with "like minded and practiced" nations with the same environmental and Health and Safety track records. This upon itself dismisses much of Asia, the big taco (Mexico) and most other DICK/taterSHIPS.

Truth is we (North America) have been getting fucked over for soooooo long we actually believed it was seduction. Stockholm syndrome. Get over it and make Murica Great again.

I'm for placing the same market restrictions on products that our products face in foreign countries.

I also don't think this tax will be implemented the way Trump talks about it. Perhaps sliced to very small segments where he feels he can get away with it without matching taxes on the other side.

That said, I'm looking to buy the best used car I can find this summer. So I will be purchasing most likely a German vehicle and not paying his tax. If I was forced, I would gladly pick up a hot Mustang and stay within the US. (I assume it's made here - all car companies are global producers now!)

There's nothing wrong with buying American. That said, I think I would buy whatever that has the most value at the time.
