This makes sense for both parties. GM has never made this division a major European player and PSA needs more volume and distribution to survive.

Actually - that is NOT true. For years - Opel was the second largest manufacturer of cars in Germany AND among the top sellers in Europe. It is still the second largest selling brand in England and had cars in a lot more different size categories. It was not until the last 20 years or so that Opel lost ground. And much of that was due to the impending "Bankruptcy" of GM and uncertain future of Opel. Much of the platform engineering of most of GM's current cars came from Germany as well as most of its smaller engines. If it were not for the price of Oil collapsing - more of GM's offerings would more closely resemble European offerings. ANd with the impending Tariffs for Mexican vehicles threatening the profitability of GM Small trucks - 35% of which are made there - GM has real problems because cars made in the USA are not selling well anymore.

PSA has a a disturbing excess of production capacity and it wants to buy Opel to increase their precarious position even further. Typical French idiocy. This does beg the question as to how GM could concede all of its European sales--which it would--if PSA bought Opel. VW and Ford must be laughing their asses off.
