BMW's i5 May Be Moving In A New Direction - Is THIS What You Are Expecting?

BMW’s next i model, the i5, will arrive in 2021 and come with a level of autonomous tech that’s never been seen before, Auto Express can exclusively reveal.

The new model, previewed in our exclusive images, will take its design cues from 2016’s Vision Next 100 Concept, which was revealed as part of BMW’s centenary celebrations. It’s expected the saloon will go head-to-head with Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, sitting somewhere between BMW’s 3 Series and 5 Series in terms of size, and be fully battery powered. However, early designs are understood to have included the possibility of hydrogen fuel-cell power for the electric motors, too.

Makes sense. The pure 2 seat sports car market is small with more models than demand.

Agreed, but man that rear headroom looks tight.

Looks great, but unless BMW finds a way to magically get this vehicle below $70k, I do not know if it will sell/lease well.

This will not be a volume seller, and I don't think it is what BMW after. I don't see why they have to go below $70K when Model S still cost much more. This is a BMW, and their quality interior and materials are miles ahead of Tesla

I keep seeing a buck-toothed beaver in that face ;-) They have lots of time to fix that between now and 2021.

BTW, what's the point of showing off stuff that's 4 years away from point of sale? Are they trying to NSX us and have us be bored of an "old" product by the time it shows up in the showrooms?

That is the form factor I expected the i5 to take. This is obviously BMW's response to the Model S, but 2021 is 4 years away... they really needed to get this out to market this year or 2018 at the latest.

Different color might make it look better.
