Road Test: 2007 Audi S6

They love everything Audi. They just believe that a little more flair is necessary to command attention from M5 owners and the like.

I am included in that "chorus". While the color of my car is endlessly beautiful (Sprint Blue, look it up), the body, especially in plain colors like silver, black or gray, looks too much like a normal A4 Cabriolet.

But colors that stand out, like the red shown, my color, and yellow, are fascinating and command a lot of attention for Audi's S-cars.

Hot damn this car looks amazing as it is..

SUCH a better gearbox than the lowly SMG in the BMW M5.

That's funny, because every single magazine, newspaper, person, you name it, has said that DSG is about 10X better than the annoying SMG system. It ruins BMW's M cars and completely takes the fun out of the new M5.

Case in point: the "lowly" S6, which wasn't designed to be an M5 competitor, was compared with the M5 and E63 (in the only three-way they've had so far).

The end results:

1. Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG
2. Audi S6
3. BMW M5 <----Purely because the SMG system sucks so much.

And DSG is the only dual-clutch manual on earth that's faster than its manual equivalent.

I like those LED lights on the lower grille.

What's the point of this car, to bridge the gap between a V8 5 series/E class/A6 and the true exotic E63 and M5? Why doesn't Audi go all out with this, I can see having a S and RS4 (somewhat), but at this price point who is gonna settle for second best? And it's a freakin V10 too, one capable of way more power, so why water it down for this, the top of the line A6?

The point of this car is basically exactly what you said. It's a small niche in the market, and its only real competitor is the Jaguar S-Type R (which is nowhere near as good in any area). But it is a market, nonetheless.

If the RS6 doesn't come out by next year, I'll go crazy. The RS6, or at least the last-gen, was a true M5 beater, and I expect no less from the new one. Audi takes way too long with its RS cars.

I don't know what you meant by "at this price", because it's about $12K less tan an M5.

Of course the DSG is dumbed down for poor folks, Logical.

because bmw are a cheap car brand.
you know the "carbon fibre" in the z4m isn't carbon fibre, its leather that's made to look like carbon fibre? now if that doesn't show that most drivers are complete air heads, i don't know what does.

Also, my buddy's CND$ 70,000 Imola Red 330ci convertible has the ugliest 'carbon fibre' pattern black hard plastic trim on the dash. You know the kind of pattern where it is just perpendicular series of squares of lines. It looks cheap and dumb in a 70k car. The rest of the interior I like. Mostly...

It is funny how much nicer a 'cheaper' Lexus IS is. That interior, no matter what anybodys says the faults are, outweighs the 3 series interior in my books.

also, the ridiculous price of the z4m (over here it's 80000 dollars) made them think the 2.5si SE with a 0-60 time of only 1.5 seconds less, and it's price of 55000 dollars, was a much better buy.
even the 3.0 is 62000 dollars, and that's quick enough already.

That sounds pretty tacky.

Cheap hard black plastic with carbon fibre grooves is worse though. How much was the 2006 330ci convertible for you in the UK?

a 330 convertible (non-sport model) here with an auto tranny (2000 dollars), leather (2400 dollar option) is 70000 US dollars. bargain britain, obviously :S
we get wood, not faux-carbon though, luckily.

The Z4M is cheap as chips here! $50K! $10K less than the less-powerful Cayman S!

But, you do get what you pay for. Cayman is a more satisfying car- better to drive, to look at, to be seen in, to be driven in.

s4carbiofox, wrong again Car magazine also compared the M5, s6, and AMG. BMW was rated the best. I love it that you Audi fans think Audi is a prestige auto brand, however market research, sales and profits says Audi is not in the same league as BMW or MB. In fact did you know VW group plans to cut spending by $5 billion by 2008, and is laying off 40,000 workers. I don't think BMW is cutting spending or laying off anyone.

It's the only article in the world where the three have been compared. They said the M5 was too complicated to use with all the transmission steps, didn't offer a significant performance advantage, and the SMG was a POS. The E63 was the most satisfying, and the S6 was for normal people who don't need 500hp.

It's funny you talk about VW Group, because Audi makes most of their profits- Audi can do its own thing while VW loses money, I hope you know. They have separate profit margins. Audi isn't laying anyone off, either-- in fact, they're getting much bigger and adding technology.

I love it that you're so insecure and pretend Audi ISN'T a prestige auto brand. Audi is the third biggest luxury maker in the world. Right behind BMW and Mercedes. And by 2010, they'll all be neck-and-neck.
