BMW 5 Series G30 vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class

BMW 5 Series G30 vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The 5-Series and the E-Class are the cars that define the mid-size executive saloon segment, the ones every competitors aspires to beat - and, at the same time, they are themselves the deadliest of foes, vying for top honors, for there can be only one winner.

Think Ayrton Senna vs Alain Prost, Real Madrid vs Barcelona, LA Lakers vs Boston Celtics (the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird era), Ferrari vs Lamborghini... you get the drift.

Since BMW has just launched an all-new 5er, it's only natural then to compare it to the Mercedes. Not on the road, of course, but visually, and even though it's a bit two-dimensional (pun intended), it's far from superficial.

I couldn't tell the difference between the new E300 from C300 the other day until it got next to me and I saw it was a bigger vehicle (slightly) and the E300 badge. As much as this 5-series looks similar to the last generation 5, at least you don't mix up with a 3-series.

Mercedes will already need to up the power in the E43 AMG. It's going to be priced the same as the upcoming M550i, yet have 60+ fewer hp, and be slower to 60 by over a half second. The S6 also has almost 60 more hp and goes to 60 in almost a full second quicker, yet costs a few thousand less.

In this segment it's less about 0-60 mph times and more about looks, the character of the engine (smoothness not all out power) and technology.

Mercedes-Benz has a better strategy than BMW for this segment (and just about all other segments based on sales). The new E-class looks a lot different than the existing model. The same cannot be said for the BMW 5-Series.

While the E-Class look very similar to the C-Class, Mercedes-Benz will at least be able to attract current E-Class owners who want the new model and existing C-Class owners who are happy with their car but want more room or have more money to spend on an E-Class.

Existing BMW 5-Series owners will be more inclined to keep their existing cars instead of getting the new model given than 99% of people won't be able to tell the difference.

Disagree. When someone is shopping for the E43 AMG or M550i, they are looking for performance and 0-60 times will have an influence. If 0-60 didn't matter, then they will go with the E300 or 530i/540i.

In the volume models of this segment (ie. E300, 530i) it is all about lease prices...as long as the car isn't a POS. Agreed that with the E43/M550i specs matter.
