UAW Stands Tall With Trump On NAFTA - But Will Trump Support The UAW And High Wage Labor?

NAFTA has cost the U.S. as many as 500,000 auto-related jobs, UAW President Dennis Williams says, which is one of the reasons why the union endorses President Trump’s vow to overhaul the trade deal.

“NAFTA is very important to us,” Williams says, noting the UAW has been critical of the deal eliminating tariffs on goods shipped between the U.S., Canada and Mexico since it was first proposed back in the 1990s. Over the years, the union has maintained a running critique of NAFTA as automakers and suppliers have moved work to Mexico to capitalize on lower wages and relaxed regulations there.

Trump needs to ban unions from all political action and make the USA a right-to-work nation. Now if he can get the UAW to kneel and bob, then so be it.

You got this backwards. Trump took on NAFTA to the benefit of US workers and UAW.
They owed him their support and he owes them nothing going forward.

Certainly if we can get rid of unions, drive wages down to levels where we can compete with the coming wave of cars built in China and India it is a win wi.... Let those stupid Germans and Japanese pay higher wages that benefit a strong middle class.

valhallakey: I assume you're employing sarcasm. On that assumption, I believe two elements are necessary...

(1) Employees who desire to deliver superior value (obviously not for minimum wage), and do!... rather than embracing a sense of entitlement.

(2) Employers who genuinely care about their employees more than they care about maximizing their bottom line, and one of the ways they express that care is by paying more than a "decent" salary.

One without the other is a path to yet more discord.

Agreed! The people on the front lines know the most about ways to improve quality and productivity, put them into the mix on decision making, hold them responsible and accountable. Also hold the execs responsible for their actions as well.
