Mercedes Bringing 600 HP Panamera Crushing Rival To Geneva
Yes, it’s that time of the year again where we get inundated with teasers of major manufacturer reveals that will dominate the Geneva Motor Show in March. This year also happens to mark the 50th anniversary of AMG. As you’d expect, the manufacturer has big plans to celebrate its birthday, including the reveal of its 1,000-hp F1-inspired Project One hypercar. But that won’t be shown until the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year. So, what's AMG planning for Geneva? According to Autocar, it will debut a concept for its new 600-hp GT4 sedan.

People who are looking for a 4 door Porsche will not want a Mercedes.

AND people who are looking for a fast Mercedes 4 door- will not want a Porsche.

It may seem logical competition based on Statistics of the cars - but it really is not.

@TomM I think there is definitely some connection between those two target buyers, would be interested to hear why you don't think so.

Well, they used to say that about 2-door sport coupes until the AMG GT came along. This GT4 won't be another S63 Sedan or even E63 sedan.

The two brands occupy different segments of the market - Porsche is into high end sports cars - while Mercedes is into High end luxury cars. Yes - it seems these two compete - but people who want a Porsche - want a Porsche with its reputation. And likewise with Mercedes. It is like trying to compare a Mercedes S600Maybach to a Bentley Mulsanne. THe Mercedes may actually be a better car by lots of factors - but it is NOT is the same class as the Bentley-period. In the arena of high priced high end vehicles - most brands have a pecking order that was built up over time. ANd that is what the upper crust buys into.

Do you consider the AMG GT a high-end luxury car? Or the R8? Are the Cayenne and Macan "sports cars"? The reality is that those very defined lines in market share are blurred today, moreso than ever. Almost every brand is trying to diversify their product line to capture market share from other brands. Why don't you talk to my friend who traded in his Panamera Turbo S for the S63 AMG b/c the AMG was just a "superior car" (his exact words).

The Panamera crusher should be the CLS.

ClS is too small to be a direct contender of the Panamera.

Have you ever actually sat inside of a Panamera? Its tiny, claustrophic, and the rear seat is a little cramped.

In the last-gen, Porsche sold a long-wheelbase Panamera (called the 'Executive') but it was priced about $25,000 higher than the comparable SWB version (sold in 4S, Hybrid, and Turbo versions I think).

In the newly released Panamera (which is quite nice IMO), the LWB version is priced a nominal $5K or so above the SWB version. Porsche Manhattan had a new Panamera Turbo pre-release prototype in their store last week and I got the call to check it out. Its a beautiful vehicle but if I get one, it will be the LWB version.

Mercedes should make a CLS based on the C-class (replacing the old E-Class based CLS with a car that is beautiful and a little cheaper and a little smaller) and then they should launch a no-holds barred Panamera-crusher based on an amped-up version of the E-class and price it slightly higher than the old CLS, badged as an AMG.

...Just my two-cents
