Musk Claims Workers Would Lose Out If They Unionize

In a conference call to discuss Tesla’s fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, the automaker’s co-founder, billionaire and aspirational Martian Elon Musk continued to push back on reports of an ongoing unionization effort at the company’s California factory. Musk said there’s “obviously quite a strong effort” by the UAW to unionize Tesla, but he thinks it wouldn’t benefit his workers.

When asked how a successful union drive could impact Tesla’s cost structure, Musk demurred that it could even happen at the Fremont, California plant.

For once, Musk is right.

I don't have sufficient information to conclude that Musk is right, or that he's just doling out anti-union rhetoric, which isn't uncommon for business owners.

I have seen a number of touching stories about small to medium size businesses that treat employees like family. One such business is owned by a Greek immigrant who came to America penniless and started up what would become a successful yogurt company. One day he called a meeting with all the employees, and gave each of them a substantial share of the company (worth about $60,000 each). He said it was his way of thanking America for believing in him, and thanking all the great people who helped make his company a success. Employees and employer were in tears with all the gratitude floating around.

Its unfortunate that Mr. Musk chose to build his car in the People's Republic of California. He relied on the government to get business going but he is about to pay the piper.

Between the Solar City Merger, looming unionization, and a troubled Model 3 launch (where are the spy photos of ACTUAL, RUNNING, test vehicles?) he is facing Kalifoniageddon.

Sadly, I think the best analogy to Musk's situation is that tragic, failing dam situation at Oroville, CA. The dam that fell victim to humans ignoring known, powerful forces (water pressure and deferred maintenance for Oroville and the auto market and investor transparency in Tesla's case) and instead coasting on government largesse.

Did you hear the latest? (a) Telsa's CFO quit; (b) Tesla's 'test plan' for the Model 3 involves Tesla employees BUYING (!) early Model 3's which they will run in a test fleet [can we extrapolate that those employees will be the only humans who are taking delivery at the launch date?]; (c) Tesla has lost a sh*t-pot of money since its inception 10 years ago; (d) it will soon have REAL competitors; and (e) Tesla does not really have any meaningful patents on its technology - it is substantially 'open-sourced' so if it goes belly-up there will not be any meaningful intellectual property to sell.

Hope I'm wrong! Hope also the Oroville dam holds and can be fixed by the government bureaucrats!

Model 3 launch looks pretty on-time, with several release candidates making the rounds in Silicon Valley today.
