Norway To Phase Out Sale Of Diesel And Gas Cars By 2025

Norway wants to phase out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2025 using a ‘polluter pays’ tax system, designed to incentivise the purchase of low and zero emission vehicles.

In a report published onto the country’s sustainable transport site Elbil, the Norwegian government said targets to grow sales of low and zero emission vehicles to represent 100% of the new car market were feasible "with the right policy measures".

Norway is a special case that's especially well suited to this type of change. They're a relatively tiny country (compared to the USA or Canada), and they're based on an older system of urbanization, so unlike North America where an hour-long commute is routine, people routinely drive shorter distances in Norway.

Similarly, Norway can easily take advantage of wind and wave power (geographically ideal for that), and not have far to transport that electricity from its generating source.
