Renault Building a MX5 Killer?

Despite Renault’s successful achievements in Formula One, the company still doesn’t have a formidable sports car to showcase its performance know-how. That may change with news that the French auto manufacturer is rumored to be producing a small two-seater roadster to take on the likes of Mazda’s MX-5. Recently, we reported that BMW’s planning its own compact roadster in the form of the Z2 while SEAT might develop its own Tango roadster, and it appears now that the world’s best selling sports car is under attack from all angles.

According to an article from UK’s Auto Express, Renault’s boss of its high-performance division, Alain Dassas, confirmed that the company will introduce a small sports car and use its F1 involvement to market it. Dassas went on to add that the new car would be in showrooms by 2010.You may remember Renault’s previous two-seater roadster. Pictured above is the Sport Spider, which Renault built from 1996 to 1999, was largely criticized for its lack of a roof and windscreen sold as an option.

The first generation was an incredible car.
At the track it ate MX5 all the time.

Well Renault MUST have done a good job of the Spider's styling considering ignorant American's have not yet commented on how dated it looks -namely because the car you see was launched in 1996!
