BMW Playing Catch Up To The Q5 With Third Generation X3

An overhauled BMW X3 is on the way, with the Audi Q5 rival revealed in a set of spy shots released by BMW Austria today. The new model has been in the works for years, and these shots reveal that the X3 won’t change much in terms of size.

Competition from Audi, Mercedes and now Porsche will see BMW completely overhaul its Q5 rival for its third generation, due on sale in the middle of next year.

The Audi and the Porshaudi are simply better than the BMW.

I don't know if I could present a compelling case to assert that Audi is better than BMW, but I can say this:

(1) I used to be a long-time BMW owner (18 years, 4 vehicles), and I loved them!

(2) When I was shopping for a new vehicle, I compared the 2015 Audi Q5 to the offerings from Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover, and even non-luxury brands, and the Q5 stood out (to me) as offering considerably more for the dollar, and with much nicer styling (to my eyes). It was a clear winner for me.

Today, I'm not warm to the new 2017 Audi Q5, and would likely consider a Mercedes GLC SUV. The 2017 Audi Q5 no longer offers the meaningful "bang for the buck" advantage it once did.

The Audi does luxury better and the Porshaudi does performance better.

It's amazing how out of touch the X3 has always been. Especially when the last gen X5 was such a leader. Can't say the same for the current gen X5 though.

BMW's problem is that they are trying to be all things to all people and chase every market segment. You can't be in this many verticals without loosing focus and compromising your core identity. After owning numerous models most my adult life, I am done with the brand as they have no compelling products that appeal to me anymore and frankly have become all to commonplace.

the new Q5 has a lot going for it. I just got out of an X3 for 4 years. It was a great vehicle, handles really well, no issues at all, no squeaks at all so happy but just overall misses the bar with emotion. If I was going back to SUV it would be Q5 in that league, mainly for design inside and out compared to BMW

I don't think BMW is playing catch up at all. I let my wife go out and drive everything in the market segment and she felt the X3 was above and beyond better. The Q5 she said had dated technology. She basically didn't like the user interface or the low resolution screen.
The X5 is far and above everything else in its market. Hopefully the new X3 will be there as well. Competition is good for the consumer!

Get a CPO Porsche Macan S. For the price of a new X3, the Macan S is unmatched in every way, from seating comfort to ride to handling - simply perfect. A two year old CPO Porsche allows you to take advantage of the depreciation discount, while it drives far FAR better than any BMW X series. It's that far ahead of the competition. Granted the new X3 will probably have roomier back seats (they always get bigger), but if that's not a priority, then IMO the Macan S pre-owned is the car to get.

Indeed. Then again did the first owner of the Macan jackbutt it around while he rented it? That is an important question on performance cars as CPO. Even if it is certified, you still need to do your homework.

quizz I'm with you, CPO Macan S all the way then this tired attempt from BMW. Darringer it's under warranty...drive it like you stole it pal. Anyone who keeps a Porsche over 50k miles shouldn't be driving a Porsche in the first place.

@MBKing CPO warranties are NOT as robust as new warranties and have numerous "out" clauses. Read before you sign.

BMW's entire X line needs help. At first X5 was revolutionary and you maybe could say the original X3 pioneered that class, but now a days it feels like every other premium automaker is miles ahead of them.
