Study Indicates That Obama Era Mileage Requirements Will Lead To Job Losses And Drive Consumers Away

As President Donald Trump weighs easing U.S. fuel-economy rules, an automaker-funded study offered support based on looming cost increases for consumers and a short-term drop in industry employment.

U.S. consumers may pay an average premium of more than $1,800 per vehicle by 2025 due to tougher fuel economy and emissions targets, according to the Indiana University study, which was conducted over 18 months and funded by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

LOL. The exact same and equally lame and WRONG arguments were made way back in 1972 and continued all the way through the 1980's. What happened instead and in real life was that technological breakthroughs and fuel advances mandated by government regulations CREATED new jobs and auto sales went through the roof with record profits for car makers. All those catalytic convertors didn't make themselves. New factories and workers make them. Fuel injection didn't;t invent itself. It took research money and high tech workers to invent it. Again, government regulations create the environment where these now standard technologies came to be. If Obama era regulations are allowed to sty in place, rest assured American auto makers will rise to the challenge once again and provide new breakthroughs for the future. Instead, it looks like foreign car makers who will be under stringent regulations from their governments will invent the newest breakthroughs and own the technology behind it.

Current system is broken, balancing poor with good, and meaningless loopholes. Not that all vehicle couldn't be Prius's, but the market won't go there. Should be looking for the most effective way is to improve the worst vehicles or limit there usage.

Free market, baby!

Many are sick of the social engineering bullshit the Democrats do by passing laws to force their political views on citizens.

Nice try, but you attacked the messenger and not the message. Thus my thesis stands. You're a triggered moonbat.

There is no such thing as a "free market." Period. A market is an invention created by people defined by societal norms, greed/altruistic spectrums, morality and due process of law, while lawbreaking and coercion enter the framework as market disturbances. There is no "free market" as all markets are subject to regulatory mandates and the need to fight against criminal elements and violation of common interests. Where the mandates come from is the difference. In a related note, I've noticed a distinct correlation between those that cry for a "free market" and those who also run away from any and all actual responsibility for nasty repucussions of their actions in particular environmental impact, chemical spills, and chemical emissions. It seems what "free market" people want is actually a market where large corporations can do whatever they want and not pay for the downside of their actions.

There is no true free market because the Democrats hate prosperity.

Why is it that Autospies seems to be always scouring the internet to find articles that make Obama look bad? We all have our biases, but come on, if you cant be fair to both sides, leave the politics out, and just stick to relevant auto reviews, which is what we visit this site for.

I'm Canadian, I only visit the US for a month or so each year during winter. I don't give a sh*t about Obama or Trump, Democrats or Republican, I'm just a car enthusiast that visit this site for automotive insight, not politics. I would go to CNN or Fox news if I wanted to read and argue about American politics. It is clear, though, where the political allegiance of the editors of Autospies lies, and that is my beef, they should just stick to cars if this is an automotive website
