Volvo's Boss Predicts Death Of Diesel Post 2020, BUT Isn't It Dead NOW?

In a recent conversation at the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo's CEO, Håkan Samuelsson, noted that diesel will still play a critical role for the near future. Obviously, he's speaking strictly from the perspective of an automaker.

But, if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Essentially, what I am getting at is that it seems as though buyers are not flocking to diesel products at the moment. Thank you, Volkswagen!

So, while auto manufacturers bank on diesel products to skirt around CO requirements, from the latest conversations I've had it seems that buyers are completely uninterested in oil burners.

What say you, Spies? Is diesel dead NOW or does it still have some legs?

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson has expressed doubt over the long-term future of diesel engines...

...Samuelsson conceded that diesel has a crucial role in the short term "to cope with the 95g/km CO2 requirement, so until 2020 diesel will continue to have a very important part to play. After that twin engine (hybrid) and all electric cars will become more favourable cost-wise, and when the requirement comes down below 95g/km, I am quite sure the diesel engine cannot help us."

Instead, he sees the future as increasingly electrified. "We will introduce our first all-electric car in 2019," he said, "and by 2025 I can see us offering a pure electric model in all of our ranges..."

The ONLY reason diesel got any traction in Europe was that governments paid down the cost of fuel.

In the USA, diesel engines were quickly brought to market during the fuel crisis and GM did its best to destroy diesels as a viable option.

Modern diesels require far too much technology to make diesels meet emission standards and VW has done its best to make it clear that the only way to have a clean diesel that's drivable is to cheat.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Prius showed the way to go.

I really am surprised hybridization is not more widespread among minivans, crossovers, and pickups.

Diesels are horrible. Yes they have a lot of torque but then they run out of steam 2/3 of the way to redline, so why bother.

Diesel is alive and well across most of the non-US part of the world. It never caught on in passenger vehicles in the US because of GM's crappy early attempts in the 1970s, with clattering, smelly, smokey, unreliably, breakdown-prone, and hard-to-start passenger diesels. That's the memory in most Americans' minds today.

VW has allegedly got out of diesel. No doubt Dieselgate played a big part in that decision. Meanwhile, GM is getting INTO diesel passenger vehicles, and early results show not only very impressive fuel economy, but allegedly legal emissions, too. Imagine that.

Ultimately, with the way battery technology is going, it's likely that ICE is going away to be replaced by EVs that can do over 1,000 miles on a single charge. Not in the short term... but eventually.

I will absolutely buy another diesel, assuming one is available in the car of my choice. The Mazda CX-5 and Chevrolet Equinox will both get my attention. If VW offers a diesel again, yes I certainly will. However, if VW announces a hybrid version of the upcoming Tiguan that will arrive within the next year or so, I'll wait for it. Honestly, I expect a hybrid version before VW brings the diesel back.

A lot of the current driving public was not even alive during the 70's to Early 80,s when GM failed at Diesels. That memory is about as important as Oldsmobiles themselves - about as memorable in the mind of the US driver as TVRs.. The problem was - diesel fuel in the USA was not half less than the price of gasoline as it was in Europe - it was MORE expensive than gas in the USA - and it took a LONG time for one to justify the added cost of a diesel based on how much they charged for one. Diesels do not compete with gas engines on high speed performance - but for those who commute long distances - like TRUCK fleets - they are much more economical and a gas engine would hardly be a viable option in a Semi. And for people who use their cars basically for transportation rather than thrill - a diesel provides a good alternative to the gas engine in europe - where gas in so high that you can hardly justify it.

VW may have gotten out of the diesel in the USA - but it will be decades before any major gets out of diesel in Europe. At that point - it is POSSIBLE that Hydrogen will replace Diesel then - but there will Still be the need for Trucks - and as long as they produce other oil distillates - Oil is also used for heating homes still and it cannot be economically replaced by electricity in Northern Climates - there will still be diesel big Trucks.

Europe built in loopholes to enable passing standards, that will be ending soon. Diesel passenger vehicles RIP, Europe is coming to realize this.

DIesel in passenger cars is dead...Paris, Madrid, and Athens will ban diesel vehicles starting in 2025 and London probably isn't far behind. Ever since the stricter emissions standards that came around in the early 2000s the writing has been on the wall, it has taken increasingly complex emission control devices to keep the Diesel vehicles viable, and as can be seen with the latest scandals many car makers have been forced to cheat the standards to keep vehicle costs at acceptable levels. Hybridization provides equal or better fuel economy with lower emissions and operating costs.
