Is There A Model Y In Your Future? Tesla Already Looking Ahead Of The Model 3 Success

Tesla Inc — newly renamed after nearly 13 years as Tesla Motors Inc — is on the verge of what it says will be a massive expansion of production, with two new models due to arrive in the next two years.

As well as the much-hyped compact Model 3, Tesla is also expected to launch a compact crossover based on the same platform. The rumoured Model Y will, like the Model 3, be far more affordable than Tesla’s current offerings.

No EVs in my near-term future. I like the car I have, and so far, I have not found any EV that provides me with a compelling alternative.

I do believe that likely within 10 years, EVs with be the new standard, and they won't have the range anxiety issues we see today.

I still think that for many - including me - an EV might be best thought of as a second car - for local trips. I am planning to retire - and do a lot of traveling. I already make the trip from NJ to FL at least four times a year - and still do it straight through - which eliminates ALL Evs currently produced. I might consider an EV as a car to leave at my house in FLorida though. However - you can be sure that it won't be a car for which I would have to travel long distances to get service

I may be overly optimistic about EV's future, but ultra-fast charging at 350KW is coming in Europe soon (by 2018 according to some sources). Musk also mentioned even faster (500KW?) for Tesla's charger but nothing firm at the moment. I don't doubt that will arrive within the next 4-5 years.

A mid-size car with around 80KWh battery can easily get over 300 miles range. Coupled with ultra-fast charging, long distance travel will be just as efficient as ICE vehicle. Charging will be as short as your regular pit stop.

I really don't see the appeal of an EV. High-performance hybrid, I guess.

Instant acceleration, no noise or unnecessary vibrations, way lower maintenance, way lower cost for fuel, never having to go to gas station, option to charge at home, upgradeable battery. Those are in general, not related to a specific company or car. In 5-10 years they will also be less expensive than an equivalent ICE with no incentives.

No other car has gotten 400,000 reservations in one day, so even before delivery I think you can call it at least a sales success. We'll have to wait a few months to see if it lives up to the expectations.

Elon can make up any number. There is no verification of the number.

I like the Model X, except for the windshield that extends beyond the top of my head. Just doesn't seem necessary. A Model Y at a lower price could be enticing. I'm open to the idea of an electric.

Yes, and the Atlanta Falcons are the 2018 Super Bowl Champions! As long as we are announcing things in advance.

Tesla is probably rolling out the model Y to replace the issue-prone, Model X.

Nope, the X is here to stay. The Y will be a lower cost SUV based on the Model 3 platform/drivetrain. I'm assuming the base price will be around $40k vs. $80k+ on the X. The X is currently the flagship car and has several features you can't even get on the S like the self-opening front doors.

So Tesla is already celebrating the success of a vehicle that has yet to be built?

It's probably to direct attention away from the poorly engineered quality nightmare failure known as the Model X.

Um, no. This is a made-up speculative render (and a pretty nice one), not a release Tesla made. We're at least one year away from an official Model Y announcement.

@BobM, You are trying to combat logic with idiocy. Your comment has nothing to do with the article or the false premise that Tesla released information on the Y (which it didn't).
