OUCH! Pink Floyd's Nick Mason Cracks Up His Multi-Million Dollar McLaren F1
Following up on news of McLaren producing an F1 successor, I decided it may be a good time to take a breath and realize how special that F1 was and still is. It just so happens the F1 made news this week due to an unfortunate accident.

Pink Floyd's drummer, Nick Mason, is known for his auto collection. Two vehicles that have gotten quite a bit of spotlight include a Ferrari Enzo — it was said to be as exciting as Mason's book, Inside Out — as well as his McLaren F1.

While working his way around Goodwood in some sort of demonstration laps, Mason lost control, the car ran aground and directly into a tire wall. Thankfully, Mason hopped out quickly and appeared fine. Unfortunately, it looks like the F1 sustained quite a bit of damage, especially the driver's side rear wheel that looks way off.

Digging around Google it appears the last F1 sold for around $14 million, so, this is not going to be a cheap fix. Not to mention the F1's notoriously expensive to upgrade and even do simple, routine maintenance.

Rather than chastise Mason though I'd rather say "Good on ya!" Not only has he been wheeling the F1 around tracks for all to see and enjoy, he seems to be a good sport when lending vehicles for Top Gear. Glad he made it out alright.

See the crash below and what I think may be one of the best automotive reviews, ever, featuring Mason's then-intact F1.

Way to go Nick...drive that sucker every chance you get. So much better to see these high powered, high cost cars doing what they were built to do rather than gathering dust in someone's garage. It can be fixed.

I agree. It can't always be fixed, but his boo boo looks worse than it actually is I'm betting. I have no patience for people who buy a fancy car and never drive it. It doesn't have to be raced, but cars are to be driven. Sometimes you dick up your own car and sometimes someone else does the dicking through their idiocy, but track time is fun time. I'm taking the Tasmin with the 2.3 Ecoboost conversion out very very soon.

Matt -what if any engine mods are you doing and if so what is the net gain?

There is no need for engine mods. The 2.3 Ecoboost effectively doubled the power of the base engine (Ford V6 from the prehistoric age). 300hp in a Tasmin is delightful.

We swapped the engine and transmission along with a new wiring harness. Brakes are upgraded and wheels upsized to clear the brakes. We patched, strengthened, rewelded, and powdercoated the rolling chassis. The quality control was ghastly to put it politely. We're using shouty mufflers so it gives the full TVR experience.

I got the car for $750 in Texas of all places from a guy who thought it was a TR7. I happen to like the TR7 and he had one for sale along with a parts car for an additional $750. The parts car was the Tasmin. I handed him cash on the spot and then dickered the price of the TR7 down.
