The Truth Is That Automakers Will Not Rise To The Challenge Of New Plants And New Jobs In US

President Donald Trump is pressing automakers to build new factories in the U.S., but he may have to settle for plant overhauls and incremental job expansions such as Ford Motor Co.’s planned $1.2 billion investment in three Michigan factories that’s expected to create at least 100 jobs.

Trump pushed automakers during a roundtable in Ypsilanti Township earlier this month for more U.S. plants, and in a speech to autoworkers the same day he said plants “are coming back — other plants that were expected to be built in other countries are not being built.” He’s often taken to Twitter to target automakers such as Ford, Toyota and General Motors for Mexico production. In early January, he tweeted: “Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S. NO WAY! Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax.”

Sick of seeing all this Washington politico on this car site. It should be about passion and enthusiasm for cars not agendas.

Honestly I could not agree with you more, and to be honest reading anything more about this administration just kills my mood, I came so close to supporting this guy and I have never been more concerned about the legacy of America until now.

China is now poised to take the lead in Climate Change efforts and our auto manufacturers are slated to fall further behind competition in terms of innovation.

If given the opportunity, I'd ask this guy what his definition of "great" is because right now, I feel it's anything but.

Beware those who present simple solutions for complex problems.

Here's a likely scenario.

1. US Government compels US automakers to build factories in the US
2. Higher US labor costs jack up the price of American-made cars
3. Foreign-made brands become more price-competitive, offering more value for the dollar
4. American buyers flock to buy less expensive foreign brands, or same-price foreign brands that offer much more for the dollar.
5. US Government sees foreign brands as having an "unfair advantage" and imposes high taxes on foreign-made cars.
6. Now ALL cars sold in the US are a lot more expensive. Fewer people can afford them. The masses have to settle for a much lesser car that they can afford.
7. A relatively tiny group of affluent Americans get what they want: foreign-made premium and luxury cars. They take advantage of tax laws, which favor the rich, not to be crippled by the tariffs.

Yeah, sounds like a workable plan. Make it so, Number One.

Hey, wasn't this the guy and his followers who were all gung-ho about free enterprise, letting the market decide, and fewer regulations? Google "cognitive dissonance". It'll explain why a lot of folks will be pissed when they read this post.

Yes BobM - and that is WHY Toyota is building a plant in Mexico to produce Corollas - not in Germany, Japan or the USA.

So far - there have been little in the way of proposals to reduce costs of manufacturing in the Usa -

As long as the UAW is cash raping its members and being anti-business, there is no reason to build an American plant by manufacturers. Once again, Liberal ideology is destroying opportunity.

I'm just about done here. Too much politics which divides us when we're all here because we all love cars!

+++ I like to discuss politics (as you know :), but this site should bring us together regardless of ideology, for the mutual love of the automobile!

Maybe it won't work, but it gets credit for trying. But in the end we'll inevitably reach an end game of everyone being of doctors, realtors, mortgage brokers, and attorneys serviced by hair salons, landscapers, and restaurants.
