Audi SQ5 Fake Exhaust Tips Do Not Hurt The Sound
It’s no secret that manufacturers are using fake exhaust pipes these days. Some companies even simulate the sound of bigger and more powerful engines through special flaps in the exhaust system. But what you are about to see is a new level of fakery.

What you are looking at is the sexy Audi SQ5 – a high-performance SUV powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine good for 354 horsepower (260 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters). The vehicle has an appealing look with sporty body kit and fat quad exhausts.

Fake and appealing is one thing, but fake and meh? Not so much.

At least the fake exhaust will stay clean, as it isn't even connected to the real exhaust system.

There is much discussion about this over at Audiworld, and it's pretty much unanimous against them. Yeah, they'll stay nice looking much longer, but some posters over there are saying that alone is a reason they won't consider the SQ5.

I think it is smart from a design perspective. It gives them flexibility to detail the bumper lower part to suit the various models without worrying about the exhaust as part of the design. Don't think it really matters does it ? The car performance doesn't change..

Fake exhaust tips is a trend that I hate as much as I hated the silver tail lights.

Those don't even look like exhaust tips - fake or real - with the silver bars attached between them

I was O.K. with fake boobs, then fake news (CNN, NYT et al), but fake tips is where I draw the line.

Maybe not the sound but most certainly the image. A car's soul is based on the integrity of its design and function. Fake is fake.

...and to think how many average consumers driving vehicles with this "setup" don't even know their super-snazzy exhaust tips are super-fakery. I'm guessing the exhaust pipes move around a bit - in relation to - the rear bumper/fascia. All that movement would damage the exhaust end pipe & leave those really ugly exhaust soot streams on the back of SUVs & such. They would be annoying to keep clean & would probably damage the "chrome" finish fairly quick after initial purchase. Warranty headache for sure.

There is no reason they have to go through the facia though.
