UK Readies Scrappage Program To Rid Cities Of Diesel Cars

A diesel scrappage scheme has been suggested as a possible lifeline for diesel drivers, amid a recent spate of penalties implemented to improve air quality.

Diesel drivers could be paid to trade in their cars, the BBC reports, after outcry from drivers who were encouraged into diesels by former governments. It was previously believed that diesel emissions were less harmful than those of petrol cars, but since the Volkswagen emissions scandal broke, the effects of diesel emissions have been under close scrutiny.

On a visit to the Middle East, May said: "Decisions will be taken when we produce that [air quality] plan.

I'm not in favor of state policies that declare certain technologies to be Good or Bad (e.g., Hybrids and EVs, good; Diesels, bad). I'm in favor of policies that act on individual real-world emissions. If you build a car powered by buffalo dung and it gets better real-world emissions than a Hybrid, then I don't favor punishing you because you're not on the "Most Favored" list according to State Doctrine.

In other words: I don't care what technology a manufacturer uses to pollute less, as long as they legitimately pollute less.

Agree, no time to post though...busy working on a super secret new type of engine that uses emmisioms as it's intake and has almost no detrimental emmisions of its own... powered by buffalo dung....how did you know? How did you know??

And diesel exhaust is no more harmful than gasoline powered vehicles. With the current emissions controls, even with the VW cheating it has very few emissions. remember that the main issue with diesel is NOx. Every other measurable emission is as good as or better than a gas engine. NOx is being controlled well enough that it really isn't an issue any longer. It's such a tiny fraction of a PPM that it's almost immeasurable.
