#NYIAS: FIRST Real-Life Shots Of The 2018 Ford Explorer Break Loose
Although the 2017 New York Auto Show (NYIAS) doesn't start until Wednesday, the big automakers are getting the party started a bit early. So early we're actually a bit surprised.
That's because Ford had not one, but two, meetings today. At noon it showed off the all-new Police Responder Hybrid and during the evening it revealed the 2018 Explorer to the media.

As you may have expected, Agent 001 was on the scene to make sure we didn't miss out on anything.
The result is this collection of real-life snaps from the event. Clearly, Ford is betting BIG on sport-utility vehicles as the company has a handful of all-new SUVs coming to market by 2020. The EcoSport kicks off the series of launches, the Bronco has been named and then there's several others. Apparently the all-new Expedition doesn't count.
Care to hazard any guesses at what else is in store for us?

You gotta give Ford credit for the Explorer / Expedition / Escape exterior designs. Fairly clean deigns w/o being too future-tech funky. And there's a clear difference in design between the Ford & Lincoln brands. I know they already have enough SUV/CUVs, but it would be nice if they updated the Flex similarly as well. I think it does well to fill the minivan gap in the lineup.

The Flex is a head scratcher for Ford. The majority of the Flex's sales happen in style-conscious California, but sales of the Flex are so dead elsewhere that dealers won't stock them. It never became the big seller that Ford had hoped for, but it sells predictably year after year with MY2016 being right at 23K units, BUT the Flexes that sell most easily are the fully loaded ones )high profit), so 23K units in the $45-50K is a significant performance. I honestly cannot fathom why people spend the same money on the less attractive and less commodious Explorer.
With Ford obviously purging the Volvo platform that underpinned the Taurus, MKS, Flex, MKT, and the Explorer, once the Explorer moves to the Fusion's platform the Flex will be dead.
