According to the American Lung Association, the top 12 most polluted cities (Year Round Particle Pollution) in the US are in California and the coal country states (PA, OH, KY). The top 7 cities all come from California.

California has roughly 25M private vehicles, plus 5M commercial vehicles and heavy trucks. These vehicles are the main cause for the poor air quality California cities have suffered. California has the right to fight for its quality of life.

The Trump administration may be in the pocket of oil and oil-backed automotive industries but it has to fight the will of 35M Californians as well as the rest of the world.

To the oil and auto lobbyists: go find a gap in the bridge and jump instead.

In the past - California has received an exemption to allow it to set its own Emission standards - not just for vehicles - but also industry as well. And while CONGRESS (Not the President) could attempt to override that authority - this would begin a major battle that would have to go to the Supreme court and the California Supreme court as well. - where it is likely California would lose and win. (WHile the Supreme court would likely rule that the Federal Government has the right to set the standards - they would also likely rule that the standards set by the Federal Government are arbitrary - and do not address the issues in California - setting the stage for California to set its own rules again.) THe California Supreme court likely would uphold its position due to protection of its citizens. This would take decades - and while the Feds might move to have the controls set a side in the mean time - the California court would likely set the level at which would be allowed.

I could see a possibility of California leaving the USA over this one.

Trump needs to pummel California for the sake of Californians living under the fascist-socialist Democrats in Sacramento. California is NOT "protecting its citizens" It's doing quite the opposite. Because of California's policies, the cost of doing business here is insane and the income of Californians is putting more and more in the jaws of poverty.

We have seen what Democrats want by their "reimagining" of Detroit and Chicago into Third World war zones.

The idiots in California might try to leave, but the military would just move in, occupy, remove the government, and take it back.

California does NOT have the right to raise a middle finger to federal law and pretend it's some noble "quality of life" strategy.

California will get the living shit beaten out of it beginning 11-4-20 the day after Trump is reelected.

California recognizes it has serious pollution issues, and it is working aggressively to address them through social engineering (penalize or outlaw polluters + incentivise pollution reduction). They do so through legislation, in large part.

Meanwhile, the US auto industry wants to sell more product, preferably at a lower cost, to increase profits.

Different interests. Different agendas.

Regardless of whatever California does, Ontario will follow suit much to the demise of it's citizens. We just modeled our lefty libtard Cap & Trade program after California which is nothing more than a tax and does not reduce pollution whatsoever. It just allows the largest offenders to buy credits from the Tesla's and keep on spewing shit into the atmosphere...

You may be too young to remember, but not too long ago Canadians bitterly complained about acid rain due to industrial and automotive pollution from the US Northeast. Without tough EPA rules driven by US and California regulations, you may still be bathing in acid.
