Study Shows Tesla Model S Resale Value Is Best In The Luxury Segment

The cost of owning a car involves much more than how much it costs to buy. To get to the bottom line, it is necessary to consider depreciation, insurance, property taxes, cost of fuel, and maintenance. Of them all, depreciation may be the most important. A new survey by Autolist.com, an online car shopping service, finds the Tesla Model S depreciates less than cars from competing manufacturers. They also sell faster than other models.

Autolist compiled data from Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota, Lexus, and Mercedes as well as vehicles from Ford and General Motors, and found that a used Model S sedan takes an average of 87 days to sell — about 5% faster than competitors like the Audi A7, Porsche Panamera, BMW 6 Series, Mercedes CLS, and Lexus 460.

They don't understand the difference between High end and Luxury here. In fact - they don't even separate the highest end luxury vehicles from the second tier - like Audi and Buick and Volvo.

I would agree, premium would be a better way to describe it. Tesla never billed themselves as luxury, which has become kind of a pretentious term in Silicon Valley.

"According to Tesla...Tesla says..."

The truth is that EVs are stupendously bad at holding their value. Most EVs from lease returns go out to auction. The transaction prices there can be from 60-80% value loss after 2 years.

So, I'm sure the idiots out there who want a used Tesla, and who know nothing about car auctions because they cannot be bothered to be informed consumers, go to their Tesla dealer to get cash raped and then Tesla reports those numbers.

Are there Teslas at auction. Oh yeah, baby! There are!

Most electric cars yes, Tesla's no. When you have 70 miles of range and 50% of the purchase price is subsidized, of course an EV is going to depreciate like crazy. Tesla's have held up their value better than any other cars in their class, despite the fast pace of improvement.

MD, you might want to start planning your retirement--don't think your dealership will be around for much longer.

Wow, I'm surprised that the same guys are here to explain to us why any positive Tesla article is wrong, and that the future of driving is actually the new Lincoln Navigator.
