#NYIAS: STUD or DUD? Is Porsche's All-New Panamera Sport Turismo AWESOME or AWFUL?

#NYIAS: STUD or DUD? Is Porsche's All-New Panamera Sport Turismo AWESOME or AWFUL?
When Porsche launched the second-gen Panamera sedan we were a bit surprised. That's because its design was much more tidy and, frankly, a bit inspired by the Tesla Model S.

That's not a bad thing since the Model S is a good looking product. And, well, the first-gen Panamera wasn't kind to anyone's eyes.

But not too long ago the company showed off an all-new concept based off the Panamera. Dubbed a shooting brake, it was quite stunning. Would it be made? No one really knew.

Turns out it was given a life. Now seen in form of the Panamera Sport Turismo, the car is essentially a Panamera wagon. Making its Big Apple debut in a silvery brown, it is a particularly interesting vehicle to see in the flesh.

That said, Agent 001 did his best to capture this vehicle INSIDE and OUT. Naturally, being Agents, we're curious: Is the Panamera Sport Turismo a STUD or DUD?

I like the regular Panamera, but not this. It has that "verging on a station wagon" look that I don't care for.

As it competes with the S-Class, 7-Series, A8 et all it is an executive sedan in my book. As well, although it does not fit the historical definition of a "shooting-brake", the resurgence of this fast back body style is an homage to cars of the past with 2 doors and a rear hatch. So in my book it is a shooting brake. Much cooler than calling it a station wagon. Feel free to disagree. More poutine for me... :)

The Panamera sells in low numbers. It would be interesting if this shooting brake takes off and has sales numbers that equal or beat the sedan.

CANADIANCOMMENTS: FYI, a "Shooting Brake" has only 2 side doors with a station wagon like rear-end. The vehicle pictured here is a 4-door plus rear hatch. So not a "shooting brake."

It may be acquired taste but it will do very well.

The Panamera is now hitting dealers and I spent 30 minutes in a Panamera 4S at my local dealer yesterday and its a phenomenal vehicle.

My saleman said that the LWB is no longer confirmed for the US market but that they will be taking orders on the Sport Turismo in about 6 months for delivery around Jan 2018. It will be available with a 5 seater configuration - so its set to be the VW/Porsche product that takes on the S-Class.

I will be that it sells more than the A8 and 7-Series. Its a wonderful product and its priced very well for its content. Really fantastic!

I just saw the Gran Turismo in person at the NYIAS. I amend my prior statement - it looks like an oddly-proportioned Porsche Macan for $150,000. Not sure how the marketplace will embrace it.

Porsche, however should definitely make the 5-seater configuration an option on the normal Panamera, however.

It's a crossover SUV. Form follows function. It is as good as it can be.
Another winning design for Porsche.

I suspect they will do well with this vehicle. There is an emotional tension to the design. I am a little discouraged by the interior color. Hard to get brown correct. This looks like ear wax.

So now the Panamera is officially a station wagon instead of just looking very much like one.

This will be a huge failure. As if the current Panamera didn't look enough like a station wagon, this Panamera Sport Turismo looks just like a station wagon.

At a price of more than $100K, I don't see a big pool of buyers for this. Buyers are more likely to go for a Macan or Cayenne if they need more trunk space. If they want a four-door car they will get a Panamera.

The niche this is expected to fill is very small.

Only thing missing is the wood veneer side panels and plaid blazer with elbow patches driver.
