UK Experiments With Speeding Ticket Fines Based On Ability To Pay - Would That Float Over Here?
A new type of speeding penalty based on the offender’s income will be introduced on Monday 24 April, with wage percentage fines and 56-day disqualifications for the worst offenders.

Motorists caught doing more than 101mph in a 70mph limit could be fined between 125% and 175% of their weekly income, while those breaking the speed limit in a 30mph area will get three points and be fined 25-75% of their weekly wage. Current speeding fines are already means-based, but the new type tweaks their thresholds, which are listed below.

Sounds totally wrong but a real revenue generator that cash hungry politicians will go for. They would tax the air we breath if they could.

If somebody drives with more than twice the allowed kinetic energy (208% at 101 instead of 70mph) there is no need for any kind of mercy.

Be careful if you come to Sweden where even the VERY rich adhere to the limits. For good reason.

Yes. Let's tax the rich more. It's only a matter of time before the liveral machine starts driving this one.

Agree.

Speeding tickets should have fixed fines:

10mph over $100
20mph over $250
21+mph over $500

Speeding tickets should also be considered "fuel waster" tickets and should not go on a person's record.

Furthermore, speeding ticket rates need to be standardized with total loss of control of local jurisdictions and states to make any changes in fine.

Sorry Matt - but in the USA - the STATES control the speed limits - and therefore who is in violation and what the fine is. In fact -even though we have federally funded highway programs - the States actually own the roads. And you would never get a Constitutional Amendment to change this one.

But - taxing Billionaires at a higher rate for speeding seems appropriate - would not affect you one bit!

@TomM You speak like the idiot Liberal you are. Speeding tickets are literally a form of taxation without representation.

The time has come to reduce state autonomy in matters such as this so that Americans have equal protection under the law and to destroy the chances of shady little backwater podunks milking the speeding ticket taxation for local revenue.

Of course you support gross taxation and taxation against the people's will.

To say that I should be OK with millionaires getting higher cost speeding tickets because it will not affect me is yet another example of Liberal idiocy. Liberals love immorality. They prefer situational ethics. You're saying "As long as I'm not fucked over, it's OK if someone else is." That is immoral, reprehensible, and bigotry.

MDarringer, I'm sure that the Millionaires are in their McMansions, secure in the fact that they're guys like you out here protecting their wealth. Live big, pay big. Stop protecting folks who don't care about you.

I don't think speeding tickets are technically taxation without representation. They are a fine for breaking the law. As for having ability to pay... sounds like equal representation in some ways. If you say the ticket should be equal to 1% of my income then it kind of hits everyone equally from a financial impact. I'm not endorsing this idea but I don't dismiss it either. Maybe something to be explored. I have to say I think speeding tickets should be inexpensive in general and not impact your insurance rate, while perhaps having sometching like reckless driving that could be an added say when speeding through an active school zone etc... going 85 in a 75 on a deserted highway in Wyoming should not be a big deal...$10 or some such.

Of course that wouldn't fly here. Unless of coarse the wealthy pay less. Then guys like MDarringer would be all for it.
