Land Rover To Tackle BMW's X6 M With 542bhp Velar SVR
Land Rover’s Range Rover Velar SVR will launch next year as a supercharged V8 SUV brute to rival the BMW X6 M.

Using the same 5.0-litre engine as Range Rover Sport SVR, it’s expected to have 542bhp and 502lb ft of torque on tap, enabling a 0-62mph time of around 4.2sec.

Applying SVR weight-saving measures to the aluminium-based Velar should also bring its kerbweight down to about 1800kg. While still no featherweight, that would still make it a significant 465kg lighter than the hottest X6.

Jaguar/Land Rover's product/marketing perplexes me. The brand roles seemed well-defined. Then they got the idea to give Jaguar crossovers by rebodying Land Rovers. OK, so the Jaguar "Pace" crossovers were going to be the sporty ones, right? Maybe not? Now Land Rover is doing crossovers that better fit with Jaguar. No doubt Jaguar will get their own rebodied versions too. Now factor in where both of these are co-retailed and you have silly product overlaps. Hell, even in a stand along Land Rover Range Rover dealer you have silly overlaps.

Since SUVs are the hot segment of the market it makes sense for Jaguar and Land Rover to have lineups of SUVS. Land Rover has to maintain off road capabilities to maintain the cachet of their brand so it is difficult to compete with BMW/MB etc on price. This is where Jaguar comes in, they can offer SUVS on the same platforms without the off road components at a more competitive price.
