RUMOR: All-New Lexus ES To Pick Up Where The GS Gets Left Off?

RUMOR: All-New Lexus ES To Pick Up Where The GS Gets Left Off?
In the past couple of months there's been some interesting rumors swirling around Toyota's luxury division, Lexus. That's because the GS sedan has been having a bit of a rough go.

If the latest rumors are to be given any credence, it seems as though two things are going to happen.

First, the GS sedan will not live past this current-generation model. It's been real but the business case is no longer there.

Second, the all-new ES will essentially step up and fill the shoes of the GS. This makes sense given the ES' packaging and that it is one of the brand's biggest sellers.

Of course this is a blow to those who care about performance. The current-gen GS was given a rear-wheel drive option and the ES is setup to send power to the front wheels. While many luxury buyers tend to select the all-wheel drive options of vehicles on offer, it still was nice to have a vehicle designed with RWD intentions in the portfolio.

The ES works because it is a tremendous value. In the luxury wars, it's a better choice than an A4/3/C when you factor in quality and reliability. The trick will be to add a major styling upgrade without giving in to the temptation to move its price up.

Had an ES and was not a huge fan, tons of reliability issues. Rattles that could not be fixed, fit & finish issues, a Mark Levingson sound system would distort if it rained for some reason, and I got a shock every time I touched the door handle. It was the most disappointing car I have owned, not to mention it's a total grandpa car with poor handling. I only got it because I was thinking about going into Real Estate and thought it would be a comfortable car to haul clients in.

And of course your Tesla is perfect. You're a good employee.

Wow.. Life is pretty good for YOU! SanJoseDriver!

A one-time possible realtor with a Lexus, all the way up to a Tesla-driving PR executive (at Tesla?) in charge of monitoring internet chat boards for dissenting opinions. Way to ride TSLA all the way up over $300! What a journey! Just have to get to work on those nasty "fact-citer's" over there at 'Chasing Alpha'. Oh, those pesky facts!

Just giving you a hard time! Congrats on your membership in the Telsa club!

Since when did the ES have an AWD option?

Yup, I thought wrong.

Thank you for keeping me honest.

The ES is a horrible looking Avalon. The Avalon is a better choice if you're a grandmother or senior citizen. Just keep that crap in the right lane.

The ES works because the Avalon on which it is based - is a Full Size front drive car - which are not selling - so the comparison is missing. However - the problem is - the GS and ES are cars that were directed at different markets - the ES was for Older Folks who wanted a larger car - and did not care about performance as such. THE GS was target to the performance mid size sedan market of the e/5/a6 where it needed rear wheel drive to compete.

THe question is - where will the pricing fall - ? You can bet that the GS will lose ITS customer base - who would not be caught dead in an OLD LADY's car. If the Pricing is higher - they may lose BOTH - remembering that they do have a lot of different competition in that segment. However - Toyota is betting that the "car" segment at this level is losing sales and would rather stress other areas.

This rumor has been debunked numerous times already. Lexus WILL NOT replace the GS with ES! Slow news day autospies?

The rumor is not debunked. And lexus has the highest reliability than any other manufacturers. Good resale value as well. DO YOUR GODDAM RESEARCH BEFORE YOU POST!!!!

The GS is probably gone gone gone because of bad sales and dealers don't want it. Some I've talked to want an EV coupesedan instead of a GS and that could EASILY come off the Avalon/Camry platform.

@Jady12, what "Goddam research" have you done to be so sure that the rumor is true? Or you're just reading all the rumors?

Next ES could be developed that offer AWD, possibly via hybrid technology geared toward performance, and as such, replace the GS. Makes sense to cut back on sedan models and invest in just 3 platforms. Maybe the Avalon will not last past current generation.

The platform the ES uses is an AWD ready platform, but it just isn't marketed that way with the Camry, Avalon, or ES. When the platform becomes a Venza (defunct), Highlander, or RX it's AWD. For sales, the Avalon bitch slaps the Lacrosse and Regal COMBINED. It also handily outsells the TLX.
