Toyota Recalls 228,000 Tacomas For Failing Differentials

For nearly 228,000 owners of 2016 and 2017 model year Toyota Tacomas, this isn't the locking rear differential that was supposed to come with the truck, as an oil leak in the rear differential has prompted Toyota to issue a recall. Toyota issued a press release about the recall today.

The oil leak can cause damage to the differential, causing "reduced propulsion" according to the press release. In some cases, the rear diff may completely seize up, which will lead to no propulsion at all. Obviously, having your rear wheels lock up while driving is dangerous. If your vehicle is covered under this recall, please get it checked out.

Rear diffs losing oil and failing are not uncommon so it is something that should be checked periodically.

And more proof of the so called "Toyota reliability" bullsh$%t story, my friends Tacoma blew the transmission at 60K. I love the Tacoma's looks but I don't think they are anymore reliable than a Ford truck.

I'd definitely go with an F150 or a Silverado.

How's the Colorado/Canyon doing? At least GM still dares to compete in the compact pickup market in the US unlike Ford...

The Canyon and Colorado are doing quite well, but the problem is that these (not) small pickups cost nearly as much as full-sized pickups. They do not deliver appreciably better MPG, but they do have less utility.

I happen to think the Canyon and Colorado are better than the Tacoma, but the F150 and the Silverado/Sierra are smidge better for not much more.

The Ranger is coming, but I don't see it being especially advantageous vis a vis an F150.
