Can a 4,800-pound SUV get 27 MPG?
Conventional wisdom would say that a 4,800-pound SUV couldn’t possibly get 27 miles per gallon of fuel. Well now, it can, with diesel power of course. Thecarlounge poster Huckvw caught some Mercedes-Benz R and ML 320 CDIs leaving the factory. The EPA sticker on the ML 320 CDI said that it gets 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The gasoline powered ML 350 is rated at 16 city and 20 highway. Now that is a great fuel economy improvement, with very little loss in performance.

It isn't going to cost 70,000 dollars. It will cost about the same as the Lexus RX 400h.

I am sure the R class will also be rated @ 21/27 and that is a full size, 203 inch SUV. That is very impressive. BTW, Will, check out the you tube link on this page about how to achieve the proper RX 400h EPA ratings.

How does the RX 400h gets its electricity? Oh yes, fossil fuels. BTW (a normal car going about 40 mph would get amazing fuel economy of around 40 mpg) The only way to get electriciy without fossil fuels is sun, water (dam) wind (windmill) or the only way to get lots of it without fossil fuels would be with nuclear power. So no, your "fossil fuel free car" will run on fossil fuels most likely. The RX is also not very big.

but will, where doe it get the movement? from, burning petrol, otherwise it would be perpetual motion, and you would solve all the worlds problems.
also, in a long term test by msn autos, the ml acheived better mpg than thr rx 400h.

but will, i mean the car can only move by electricity or gas. if it moves by electricity, that electricity has come from it moving or from the gas engine. to get the car moving in the first place you need gas, and since it does not have 100% efficiency (nothing in the world does), the elctricity it creates comes from the gas engine. it does not magically create electricity from nothing.
and btw, when the car is stopped, no electricity is being created. it only creates it when it is braking, or when the engine is on. the main reason why hybrids are so efficient in town is because when the car is stopped, the engine is off.
and will, diesels do reduce needs for fossil fuels as they use less when driving. indeed, on a long trip, an ml320cdi uses fewer fossil fuels than a lexus rx 400h, thus an ml has less need for fossil fuels.
that is a fact.

Wrong, have you seen those solar powered cars. There is a limit of energy that you per area with solar pannels. And there is no regeneration on the highway, that is how hybrids get much lower than EPA numbers. And you should know that the diesel engien is most efficient at low RPM and part throttle (highway cruising)

I am comparign it to the ML Gas V6, no data for the diesel yet. But the RX 400h does add 275 pounds to the RX 350. I am sure that the gap between the MB diesel and gas will be smaller. The ML is heavy for its size (it is only 10 pounds lighter than the much bigger MB R class [203 inches] that should get the same ratings} however the M class is still bigger all around than the RX. And that battery will run out of juice after a couple of miles, even if you go under 20 mph and nearly cause an accident.

I will find you an article that said that most you could go was 10 miles or so. (RX400h) later. Read this now. And diesels are efficient because of their high copression and other stuff.

As usual, Will forgets to say that Hybrids are ONLY EFFICIENT IN THE CITY. Out in the urban setting, the diesel ML will kill the gas-guzzling RX400h in fuel economy. Period.

Well, 7 miles makes much more sense and is possible when you crawl with no acceleration and very little speed (like in the video). Hybrids always turn on the gas engine with any sort of acceleration (leaving a stop sign/light) BTW, your watch gets its power from your movement, the energy for your movement came from food, that got its energy from plants, that got their energy from the sun. Nothing is free.

that is the old 320cdi engine. it was replaced in 2003, i think. that engine is a 3.2, the current 320cdi is a 3.0, as is the 280cdi.

oh, i know how hybrids work.


basically, there is an engine, some batteries and some motors.
the batteries are charged up by regenrative braking (foot off throttle, free-wheeling, motors in wheels which are turning turn into generators to recharge the battery) and by the engine charging the battery.

when the car is stopped, the engine is off. there is no power going to the wheels. you set off on electric only, accelearate harder and the gas kicks in in tandem with the electric. you'd think that if you accelearated hard for a while, there would be no electrical power, BUT the rear wheels are not connected to the engine at all, so when the are moving and not using the electric power, they recharge their battery pack. if you stay under 20mph, and stay in electric, it will keep going till the engine kicks in to keep you moving and recharge the battery, or until you brake/coast and create more electricity.
now you are braking. the engine switches off, and you coast to a stop. while coasting, the motors in the wheels turn into generators thanks to something scientific to do with magents. so while you are braking, you are creating electricity which has come from movement which has ultimately come from petrol. at a standstill, the engine and motors are off, and nothing is lost nor created.
because of friction (the thing that stops perpetual motion), you cannot drive on electric for ever, as friction is present in the air, in the wheels, in the motors, everything.
imagine a valley; roll something down one side and it won't roll as high up the other side, EVER, due to friction. and i mean EVER, no matter what angle the slope is, it won't go as high.
does that explain it enough? i'm pretty sure the lexus website is better.
