Has Mercedes Already Won The Top Luxury Brand Sales Crown For 2017?
Mercedes-Benz has extended its lead over BMW and Lexus in U.S. sales despite suffering from falling sales.

In April 2017, a total of 159,793 luxury vehicles were sold in the U.S., a 1.6 per cent decrease over the same month in 2016. Sales of Mercedes-Benz models dropped by 7.9 per cent, BMW sales fell by 9.3 per cent and Lexus saw a decrease of 11 per cent.

Excluding its commercial sales, Mercedes sold 26,932 vehicles last month and despite that being fewer than the year prior, the brand’s sales for 2017 are still up 1 per cent over 2016, partially driven by a 48 per cent, year-to-date jump in sales of Mercedes-AMG vehicles.

There is still plenty of time for Lexus or BMW to take it over. Eight months to make up a 12k+ unit gap might not be as hard as it appears. If I remember correctly, I remember Lexus closing the gap by about 8k units in one month sometime last year (or may have been the summer previous) through crazy incentives. Granted, as I had predicted at that time, their sales teetered off a bit after that, but they still made up a significant portion of the sales gap in one single month.

It was December to Remember 2015 that Lexus closes the 8K gap. They are also big seller in July and especially August. So it's not out of the question. Unfortunately, the lost back to MB pretty much the other months so it's a wash. They had a bad start, hard to make up.

I like Lexus and the new LS may help increase their numbers, but Mercedes is on a roll design-wise and it has a much larger product line reaching pretty much everyone shopping above $30k.
BMW on the other hand needs to wake up and that can take time so I don't see them as a threat until at least next year.

Considering BMW trails Mercedes-Benz by some 11,500 units for the year and was outsold by Mercedes-Benz in April by 4,300 units, it's almost guaranteed that Mercedes-Benz has already won the luxury brand sales crown for 2017 not only in the United States but also globally.

In a word: yes.
