Are YOU Buying This? Tesla's Elon Musk Says People Are Confusing The Model 3 For The Model S
This week, Tesla reporting its first-quarter earnings. This doesn't come as a surprise as many technology companies are having their earnings calls. And, for TSLA, these phone calls can be quite revealing.

There was one thing a bit perplexing about this quarter's call, however. That's because the company's CEO, Elon Musk, had some interesting news to share.

Apparently, he claims, that consumers are confusing the all-new Model 3 and the existing Model S. According to Musk, people are left thinking the Model 3 is a successor to the Model S even though its base price will be approximately half.

Oh, and demand for the Model S and Model X is falling.

Does Elon Musk think consumers are THAT stupid? Considering that buyers are better informed than ever, it seems a bit silly to blame decreasing interest in the higher-end models on silly consumers. That said, I've got to ask: Are you BUYING what Musk is SELLING?

..."We have seen some impact of Model S orders as a function of people being confused" that Model 3 is the upgrade to Model S, Musk said on a conference call...

...
"We want to be super clear that Model 3 is not version three of our car. Model 3 is essentially a smaller, more affordable version of the Model S with fewer features," Musk said on a conference call, adding buyers erroneously thought the Model 3 would be more advanced.

"The Model S will be better than Model 3," he added. "As it should be, as it's a more expensive car..."

...Still, customer deposits fell 7 percent in the quarter, which could suggest interest in Tesla's current product line, the Model S and Model X, is decreasing...

I believe that any serious Tesla shopper is not confusing the two.

Folks who know nothing about Tesla might confuse the Model S, X, and 3, just because they can't keep sound bites straight in their mind.

Falling deposits for S and X make sense. The X is now produced in numbers comparable to S. so no more deposits anymore tat are around for many months.

What people would confuse the two - virtually no one has actually seen a real Model 3. I have - and in person they do not look much alike

How is it possible to confuse them? The Model S looks like a 5-year old $60,000 car and the Model 3 looks like a 10-year old $30,000 car.

Some on this site postulate that the Model 3 looks like a 10 year old Hyundai. The Model S looked current for about 3 years but it now looks dated. The Model 3 just looks IMO, well, kinda dumpy and cheap.

People should be seriously concerned about this move down-market by Tesla - its one of the trickiest things to pull off with any consumer business, without torpedoing the whole thing. We will all be eager to see the real-thing in the flesh.

Confusing? NOT. Lowering expectation? Definitely. After they seeing what they can offer of Model 3, Musk is doing preemptive in cases any negative press coming out of how bared bone the 3 will be.

Model 3 sounds like version 3.0 indicating it is the latest and greatest. When the 3 was first announced a lot of people thought it would have 100% of the same features as the Model S, just in a smaller size. The compromises weren't very clear until now (only one screen, no auto-door handles, fewer trim options, and there will be more with the final design). They should have just went with Model E and budgeted some money for the Ford lawsuit.

I think that comment shows some ignorance. You obviously have never spent much time in a Tesla before.
