Calls To Buy American Falls On Deaf Ears- Do You Consider The Country Of Origin When Buying?

President Trump's call to “Buy American’’ isn't stirring demand for U.S.-made goods, with many shoppers focused more on low prices than labels.

Even those who are willing to pay up for pricier home-grown items say finding domestic-made merchandise is easier said than done.

Trump signed an executive order on April 18 that urged government agencies to "Buy American, Hire American,'' a message of economic nationalism that he carried from the campaign trail to the Oval Office.

No, I buy the car that appeals to me the most with my money.

While I first and most highly consider the car that appeals to me, rightly or wrongly, I am NOT sold on the idea of a quality car coming out of some countries, such as China or Mexico.

Once the positive record is established (e.g., several years of production demonstrating a consistent pattern of few defects, solid fit and finish, respectable workmanship, etc.), then I believe I will relieve myself of that negative bias.

Remember, Japan used to make crappy cars... until it didn't anymore. Ditto with Korea.

To get back to the "Buy American?" theme, few US-made cars appeal to me, but I would not avoid a car just because it's made in the USA. All of the world's BMW Z3s were made in the US, and their quality was no less than German-made BMWs. And every Corvette is made in the USA, so we know we can make some world-class vehicles.

I have no "Buy American" bias, just as I don't have an "avoid American" bias.

Indeed, without really taking it into consideration, come to think of it, all of my cars were made in the US, including by two Japanese and one German makers.

I believe in free trade, so I don't care where the car is built. I do take some pride in quality products that are built in the US, but I don't think it changes my buying decisions.

Not all American cars are American made and not all foreign cars are foreign made.

Our current daily cars are all American but that is just a function of what we each wanted and the choice of my current company car.

I will buy the best (design, value, reliability, quality) car for the money in a given segment regardless of country of origin.
