Mercedes-Benz tops Consumer Reports' tests of luxury SUVs

Consumer Reports shouldn't be taken seriously, overall, but they are handy in detecting things like trends. In this case, it looks like MB is improving big time.

the point is that they CAN'T recommened them because they have NO REAL DATA on reliability, crash tests and the like.

they don't recommened the escalade, xc90 or q7, simply because they're too new and don't have crash data.
consumer reports won't be able to recommened the LS when they review it, because they won't have enough real data, being so close to its launch.

you always do it, you always turn something into lexus is best, even when they're not included in anyway in the article? you attack german cars fans for no reason, you could have simply read the goddamn article to see what it means, and said "oh look, mercedes benz suvs are rated higher than volvos and cadillacs". and as for your first comment, read the title of the article!!!! mercedes benz suvs rated highest! what does that telly uo about them? that they're obviously good! they are not currently able to recommened them because they don't have crash data, they don't have reliability data and they don't have real consumer data.

Has anyone actually read the article. I have - its sitting right in front of me, and let me clarify some of the potential misconceptions about the results from the article:

(i.) Mercedes does not top Consumer Reports list of SUVs

(ii.)Mercedes does not top the list of SUVs with three rows of seats

(iii.) Consumer Reports does not claim that Mercedes reliability is improving. The predicted reliability for the R class is shown as "poor" which is Consumer Reports absolute worst measure for reliability.

Consumer Reports does a test of several SUVs including the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes GL, Volvo XC90, Audi Q7(and the Mercedes R class). None of the vehicles tested gets as high a rating as the Toyota Highlander Hybrid or the Honda Pilot, which Consumer Reports previously tested.

The list of vehicles that Consumer Reports has tested recently does not include the aging Toyota 4Runner and Lexus LX470, or the latest Acura MDX. Also because they have only two rows of seats the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Porsche Cayenne are also excluded from consideration.

So to summarize, Mercedes GL and R class topped an test of several SUVs. The test excluded most of the household luxury SUV names. Even though Mercedes won out of the motley group of SUVs compiled for the test, its vehicles are still rated lower than more mundane offerings from Toyota and Honda.

Furthermore Consumer Reports has a stern warning for any potential buyers of Mercedes SUVs . . . "We can't predict reliability for this new model [GL-class] but the reliability of both the ML and R-Class has been poor."

That isn't a valid comparison. Neither the Toyota Highlander nor the Honda Pilot are luxury SUVs- and CR pretty blatantly favors boring cars because of their "smooth rides" and "clear controls" and "floaty handling".

Hey even I make mistakes, the item above should have said Toyota Landcruiser not Toyota 4Runner. Toyota makes so many fine SUVs I get the names wrong sometimes.

german cars have bad reliability,thats not the thruth. I own one have had this one for 2 years and 3 months from new. The only thing i have had with it, is a oilchange.

Before that german car, i have had two. The oldest one was a BMW e30, 318i, i was ten years old when i bought it, 14 when i sold it. Only once it could not start, a new battery solved that. So i can not say it is bad cars.
I would never buy a french, american or Italian car (ferrari, lambo perhaps ;) but our of my range).

Consumer Reports does not recommend the Mercs for the simple reason that their reliability has not been proven due to their newness.

They still have to go through the process of longer term evaluations to see just how poorly assembled and plauged by electronic issues the Benz SUVs will become.
