Porsche 911 R shows up in Gulf Oil livery
The Porsche 911 R has proven a favorite among enthusiasts – and highly sought-after, regardless of the color scheme. But some examples have caught our eye more than others. Like this one spotted online.

This particular example of Zuffenhausen's celebrated back-to-basics sports car is, as you can see, decked out in the classic baby blue and orange of the timeless Gulf Oil racing livery. Sans the logos, mind you – this isn't an actual sponsored race car – but to our eyes it looks spot on in this throwback color scheme.

I've spent a lot of time specing out various 911s. Unless you're in love with a "trackable" car, the R is likely best avoided due to its Sport PASM (20mm lower than stock, and stiffer) and racer-oriented styling inside and out.

It's a delightful track car, but much less enjoyable as a daily driver when compared to a "lesser" 911, even a GTS (if deleting the default Sport PASM that's 20mm lower and stiff).

If the 911 is your thing, the standard 911 is pretty hard to beat. I sometimes think the enhanced versions "ruin" the goodness of the base (if you can call it that) 911.

There are far too many articles and videos about this very limited production car. I think it is just being pushed at a halo car of sorts to drive dealer traffic. Nice car, but not some epic once in a lifetime touchstone.

At least in the case of Porsche, being lured to the dealer by the halo car only to purchase a "lesser" model isn't really that much of a loss. Porsches are not my thing, but all of them provide significant driving entertainment.
