Ford Accused of Faulty Ethanol Systems

An auto industry watchdog group wants the U.S. government to penalize Ford for allegedly selling cars with faulty ethanol-capable fuel systems.

Public Citizen charged in a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that Ford sold more than 200,000 Taurus and Sable cars with the reputed faulty systems, the Detroit Free Press said.

The group asked that Ford be fined $136 million in fuel economy penalties and be forced to change its advertising.

Ford contends the vehicles meet all federal standards and it misled no one, the Free Press said.

Detroit's major carmakers are committed to doubling their output of ethanol-capable vehicles, or E85 cars, to 2 million by 2010.

E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.
