I did their solar roof estimation -- $68400 with battery. Sixty. Eight. THOUSAND. So much for it being more cost effective than a normal roof. That's 5x what it cost to have my roof replaced a few years ago, and insurance paid for it. It's a cool idea, but just like their cars, not feasible for normal people.

Depending on what kind of roof you are replacing and the amount of your electric bills, the $68K cost for the roof and battery can go a long way - even without the Federal tax credit.

Over 30 years, your monthly cost is under $200 a month. What you get is a new roof and free electricity even at night. Not sure why this is a bad deal for you ?

PS: in some area, the HOA fee can exceed $200 a month, and you normally don't get much value out of it.

This is why you don't buy where there is an HOA.

This is why you DO NOT BUY your solar panels.

Still not cost effective for a large chunk of the US, but works for most homes in expensive urban areas (which also happen to be the top market for their cars). The funny thing is you can get a Tesla roof with 0 solar tiles and only the synthetic tiles, and it will be less expensive than the type of roof it is designed to replace. I bet this will be very popular for new construction.

These batteries are also a different chemistry than the cars which are designed to output less peak energy but last longer. They should be no less than 80% capacity 30 years from now, but likely you'll upgrade them with something better over 3 decades. The roof warranty is also for the lifetime of the house.

And that upgrade will cost you.

I don't work for Telsa, but I do like their products and hope others will enjoy them as well. I'm sure you have a favorite car company as well.

Tesla is first to market with this and will milk it accordingly for as much as they can. Others will follow (and copy) and the cost of the tech will drop dramatically. China will be shipping solar shingle by year end I am sure Patent or not.

Look how much LED lights cost a couple of years ago and what they cost now. I was hoping this shingle were to be more affordable as the shit Ico shingle roof on my shop is shot after only 7 years despite it being a 20 year product and my flat roof needs replacement as well. My electric bill is $1100/month and I was hoping that this could have solved some of my issues and shaved by juice costs.

Looks like it going to be a metal roof for me and an illegal hookup into the grid to power the meth lab...

"They all laughed at Christopher Columbus
When he said the world was round
They all laughed when Edison recorded sound
They all laughed at Wilbur and his brother
When they said that man could fly

They told Marconi
Wireless was a phony
It's the same old cry
They laughed at me wanting you
Said I was reaching for the moon
But oh, you came through
Now they'll have to change their tune"

Either you live in a shack, or in the Appalachians, or both, and you chose the cheapest asphalt shingles possible. For those of us living in upscale communities near major cities, the cost of this roof is less than what we paid for cedar shingles, and much less than slate.
