DRIVEN: Is The Porsche 911 Turbo And Turbo S Still The Kings Of The Castle? Or, Does The Emperor Have No Clothes?
When it comes to evaluating today's top high-performance vehicles, it's pretty hard to leave out the Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S. That's because both models are completely insane animals.

With every iteration of the 911, these two variants are the best representation of the pinnacle of engineering for pure speed and daily driving duty. Need further proof?

If you haven't already experienced it, I dare you to engage Launch Control on either and try to not feel as though you're being sent on a mission to the moon. The G-forces are incredible.

But, here's the thing: There's an awful lot of competition in this price range now. And, the enemies have been studying the tried and true 911.

Can the Porsche remain the king of its respective domain?

Eco finds out in this review. See a portion of the company's verdict, below.

...In terms of rivals, few are able to match the dynamic abilities of the 911 Turbo, but that doesn’t mean the Turbo is the automatic choice. Starting within £1000 of each other, the base Turbo has the Audi R8 V10 and McLaren 540C to compete with, both raising the stakes by offering a mid-engine layout and arguably more interesting power units.

The Audi also counters the
Turbo Cabrio with the excellent Spyder, although McLaren has yet to produce a drop-top 540C. If you're looking for something a little more extreme, the Audi R8 Plus (£138k) and McLaren 570S (£143k) both undercut the Turbo S.

I would not say this 911 is the "King of the Castle" because (a) what each individual likes is different, and (b) there is no one car that is top dog in every measurable way. There are always trade-offs and different manufacturer's focus.

Putting that aside, the 911 Turbo and S is a positively delightful car! If you want a 911 with the most power, then the Turbo S is your object of desire.

I'd prefer a Carrera 4 or 4S for the more subdued styling (no tail, fewer scoops and vents), and because I don't need more than 420 hp to have a hell of a lot of fun!

The 911 is kind of like a willing prostitute. It will do virtually anything you want it to do for the right price.

Agent00R;

"Is The Porsche 911 Turbo And Turbo S Still The Kings Of The Castle?"

Once again, bad grammar in a headline. (This occurs frequently). Please get a Copy Editor!!

Let's face it, they are monsters - but it's the same old conundrum: is it more exhilirating to drive a powerful car slow, or a less powerful car fast? My 991 turbo S is amazing, but frankly, my 718 Boxster S is just more fun for those weekend drives.

Driving a less powerful car fast always reminds you that it's less powerful when you're going fast. I'd rather have the fast car that can't be set completely free.

Have to go w/ Matt on this one but that's personal preference.

Also agreeing with Matt on this. A base 911 Carrera with "only" 370 ponies is ample, and trackable. If you're bored with that at its limits, then congrats. You're a 0.01 percenter!

Well back in the day (1980's) the original Porsche Turbo was a mythical car. Just like the original BMW M5. Rarely seen. Raw performance on tap. Hard to control. A scary car for those who could really drive. So far ahead of the pack it was that insanely capable. Jumping to today, with 700hp, 800hp, 1,000hp and 1500hp cars that can all be had for a price, it has been overshadowed by many other offerings. It is still a blistering performance car, but no longer in the owning the spotlight like it used to. Today it is a choice reserved for those who love only the Porsche brand, but want a bit more.

The automotive world today is an embarrassment of riches.
There are a good number of barely affordable cars that can be driven daily. The uber Porsche Turbo is definitely one of them, but it is definitely not the ONLY member of this esteemed super car club.
