Which Automakers Really Need A Sports Car In The Lineup To Give Them Street Cred?
As enthusiasts, we wish that every manufacturer would do nothing but build great driving sports cars. However, carmakers are in the business of making money and sports cars aren't exactly selling well right now. Even the sportiest marques in the business have been forced to focus on SUVs. Still, we think that sports cars have a place in the market to attract people to a brand. There are still several manufacturers that don't have a single sports car in the lineup and we came up with five companies in particular that we think need to build one.

Sorry - but enthusiasts (I have been one for decades) also use vehicles for transportation - and to carry things to and from. I find the suggestion that car makers only make sports cars is ridiculous. There are many pleasures to be had from cars that are not sports cars - the ride of a Rolls Royce would be an example - the smoothness of a V-12 - Fine Corinthian (and even better) leather and LOTS of others.

The fact is - unless they really really make a sports car - too many of these so called sports cars are nothing more than smoke and mirrors with some blacked out chrome and a black interior. They only serve to keep people away. And the lack of rear seat room makes parking a whole lot harder on a date.

Since there are indeed more purposes to cars than just fast controlled driving (Who are you trying to get away from to begin with?) - there remains no reason why some brands should NOT make sports cars.

What exactly is the definition of "street cred"? Racing worthy? Prestige worthy? Theft worthy?

No brand needs a sports car to be worthy of anything. Lexus was more than worthy as a brand when it didn't have any sports or sporty cars in its lineup. It had the most solid, luxurious, and reliable vehicles. On the contrary, Cadillac builds some pretty formidable sports sedans and aren't necessarily deemed worthy by many luxury buyers.

So, what's the winning formula? As long as a brand builds desirable cars, with the various factors of desirability at the varying price points, then that brand will be deemed worthy.

GMC needs one, big time.

A sports car is not necessary for "street cred" whatever in hell that means. VW and Mini have street cred without a sports car. Subaru has a sports car that does NOTHING for its street cred, but the WRX fills that bill. A Rolls Royce sports car would be laughable.

Toyota needs something that can make a grown man blush - and it should cost somewhere near $50K instead of the still born "Supra".
