Trump Makes Good On Campaign Promise - NAFTA Negotiations Begin
President Donald Trump’s administration took its first formal step toward renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, setting the stage for talks that could have a major impact on automakers and suppliers.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer gave official notice to Congress on Thursday of the government’s intention to renegotiate the 23-year-old accord with Mexico and Canada.

Lighthizer was required to do so under a law that enables the president to fast-track trade legislation through Congress. Over the next 90 days, Lighthizer will consult with lawmakers on the position the U.S. will take in negotiations, which could begin as early as Aug. 16.

If you check your records, the USA has never signed any trade agreement that is not tilted in their favour. The Elephant in the room always gets its way. It is just to way degree it is tilted. You can't blame NAFTA for the actions of transnational corporations that have always and will always look after their own best interests. PS Reportedly White House lawyers were looking up the procedural details of the impeachment process today. Tick tock...

Are you comments about the procedural details of impeachment a hope for you?? What I can't understand is how the liberal minded person can justify to the middle class manufacturing sector American who has lost his/her job due to outsourcing to cheaper foreign countries that this was good for him/her. Please enlighten all the voters that have family and friends or have been themselves impacted by the mass exodus of manufacturing to cheaper labour forces in foreign lands. Tell them why the mass numbers that voted for Trump are being told by the losing elite and liberal voters that their voice should not stand? Tell me how the liberals can state the persons involved in an assassination of a foreign national and leader of a country for financial gain is the right alternative for POTUS. Tell them why members of a government that have led the US astray for 20+ years should be voted in because it is "The Status Quo". If they didn't get it right in the last 20+ years how can you justify giving them another 4 years to dig us deeper in? In the last 20 years our debt has climbed from an already high few Trillion Dollars to a colossal Twenty Trillion Dollars and all at the hands of both Republican and Democrats, all of which have been career politicians. Would it not be bold to elect someone out of that mould to hope for change and then give the person at least that 4 year term to see wether he can make a change. After all the previous POTUS gave us 7+ Trillion more debt and massive increases in the expenses for the middle class sector while reducing manufacturing in the US all in his two terms. Lets see if we can turn this ship that has steered us in the wrong direction for over two decades and start heading back in a positive direction. Let this man try to make America better than what the last 20 years legacy has left us with.

Manufacturing is a sliver of the economy. The past 20 years have been phenomenal for those in most other sectors and our overall GDP per capita (true measure of output) almost doubled in that time. Also, there is a concept called free trade. If you are a lawyer that earns $300 an hour and can type 150 words per minute, does it make sense to pay someone $30 an hour to help you that can only type 75 words per minutes. The answer is hell yes, and both the lawyer and admin benefit. Even if you can do all jobs better then everyone else, there is still a strong case for focusing on where you can maximize GDP and outsourcing what is less effective.

Also, if you are in manufacturing and you are under 50 years old, you are going to get screwed and should start studying something else like machine repair. It doesn't matter who is in office, the end result is inevitable. We are less than 10 years away from machines and 3d printing making the majority of manufacturing jobs (regardless of country) obsolete.

You have some valid points, however free trade also drives manufacturing from sectors of one country to sectors of another that is willing to work for less so that the parent company can see larger profits. My approach and view point comes from thinking that the elected officials were elected by the public to ensure the electing publics future is going to remain secure. When I have voted for president and other government officials I did not do so with them telling me they were going to write legislation that was going to strip my areas jobs to send them to a impoverished country so that we as a world group can help those less fortunate see a better way of life. As much as I can have empathy for someone else's situation in life my emphasis is always for the needs of my families first. I do all to ensure my families situation is secure. In most of these third world counties that the manufacturing is being sent to, the governments and leaders are so vile and reprehensible but the parent companies are only interested in how cheap they can get their products to market. And most is done because of the UN directive to disperse manufacturing and economic growth to less affluent nations in order to create more equality through out the worlds economies. The UN's initiative is also to strip any single country of having the title of a super nation and I, being an American through and through, believe that our officials should be doing everything to ensure our place as a super power. Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton were both very closely aligned with the directives of the UN and I believe the US is a sovereign nation and it takes orders from no one. So when I read all this about free trade I see the US giving its sovereignty up to please the corrupt officials of the UN. What I know is that there has never in all the written history of the world been a single benevolent dictator and if we and the other nations of the world and doing as the UN states then aren't we following a dictator?? And ultimately Dictators are narcissistic power hungry, greedy and malicious beings, hence why I feel we should distance ourselves from any UN directive and start to become the superpower we once were again.

Sincerely

A Patriotic American.

NAFTA does need some tweaking and modernization for sure but what about China and its constant currency devaluation tactics? This alone far surpasses the minuscule trade deficit with Canada and represents trillions in global losses for many countries...

The only NAFTA issues with Canada is Poultry, Dairy and Softwood. Poultry and Dairy were never part of NAFTA because we like paying 4X more for our milk, eggs and cheese products thanks to a stupid socialistic government food controlled quota system that only rewards a handful of farmers at the expense of the rest of the country. I hope Trump prevails and we are forced to scrap this asinine system.

Softwood is way cheaper here because we have much more forestry on crown land that can be processed royalty free by foresters. That's not dumping and has already been struck down 2X before by the WTO and will be again.

Timber is one area where we enjoy cheaper production costs than the US and most other sectors we are at a huge disadvantage but America benefits as you can't produce enough domestic timber to satisfy your own housing needs. Slapping tariffs on this will only increase house costs and other wood based products.

Trump is no community organizer world apologist but rather trying to do what is in the best interest of Murica -something that Busch, Clinton and Hussien failed or refused to do in there respective terms. I would happily trade you Trump for our leader -Mohamed Trudeau who thinks government "budgets balance themselves" and that "we should grow the economy from the heart out". Yup Canada is fucked!
