No, they were the first of the sports/luxury SUV segment.

The ML, followed by the RX, were the first car-based luxury SUVs, but they only focused on comfort. And the RX was so much better than the old ML that it wasn't even worth a second look for us. But the X5 added sport to the equation and started a revalation.

the ml actually had a seperate chassis, it wasn't car based, nor was it grand cherokee based.

no but they didn't.
ml, range rover and discovery.
range rover was very unreliable, ml was garbage, so was discovery.

The X5 weighs more than a Q7??? And the Q7 is about ten inches longer, has a more powerful V6 and equally powerful V8, has about an equal interior, and goes for less!

Whoever buys an X5 4.8si over a Q7 4.2 Premium must be crazy... I can understand the X5 3.0si, though.

overall, I love the X5 performance wise, but i have to say that the styling in he rear-end is not among my favorite, I think if it were closer to the 99-04 grand cherokee it would look a little better.
