Model X Sales Lag Behind The Sedan - Did Tesla Drop A Turd In The Ultra Hot SUV Segment?

Model X Sales Lag Behind The Sedan - Did Tesla Drop A Turd In The Ultra Hot SUV Segment?
Not everything Elon Musk touches has been a runaway sales success.

While Tesla Inc.’s Model S has been a hit and thousands lined up to order the upcoming Model 3 sedan, the Model X crossover hasn’t met the CEO's expectations. Model X deliveries have yet to keep pace with the Model S, as Musk predicted, and U.S. registrations of the vehicle have slipped the last two quarters, according to IHS Markit.

The error is obvious - the Model X is not an SUV - it is a four door Hatchback with all wheel drive.

Not sure what you mean, has more interior space than and cargo room than many large SUVs.

There are 4 Model S cars in my area. But only 1 Model X. It is an acquired taste. But this family with 3 kids loves it. Personally the falcon doors would have be a show stopper for me if I had ever needed this kind of vehicle.

I agree that the falcon doors were a big mistake. Can't use a roof carrier, needless complexity, etc. I think even Musk has acknowledged they shouldn't have used them.

One of my neighbors just got a Model X P90D and the whole family loves it. It actually looks pretty good with the giant black wheels and black exterior.

@SanJoseDriver actually that is your exaggeration. Show the source where 100% of all "global scientists" (whatever in hell that means) have issued scholarly OPINIONS on this and where 99/100 agree with a Tesla driver.

Remember, science proves nothing and only puts forward a theory (opinion). The fact is that there are plenty scientists who observe that the earth has heated and cooled again and again over time. In fact, the current indicators point to cooling.

I guess that's an inconvenient truth you wish not to face.

The faster they can re-engineer the Model X to get rid of the falcon doors the better. Making it look more "trucky" and less "pregnant hatchback" would work too. The X is ungainly looking in person.

Musk's comment was that they over-engineered the Model X and released too many things that had never been done before as opposed to starting with the simplest iteration like the Model S.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but falcon-wing doors are not going anywhere and will also be used on the Model Y in 2019/2020. There were a lot of issues with them at first when the car came out, but my neighbor and his family love them and never had a single issue with them. The front doors are also fully automatic (auto open/close), which I think is just as interesting as the falcon wing doors.

As for why the Model X is selling more than the S, I also feel the 20%+ difference in base cost is a factor. Until the Model 3 ramps up, there will be a more affordable version of the S (75 RWD, $70k base price).

@SanJoseDriver I would not want my wife and kids in a Model X with the falcon doors--because the doors are so damned slow to open and shut--that they place people at a much higher risk of car jackings and other forms of violence that the speed of a conventional door mitigates.

So far that has never been an issue, not once. Tesla's are also the dumbest thing someone can carjack since they are tracked 100% of the time (you cannot disable the 3G connection without making the car inoperable) and can be remotely stopped by Tesla with a single phone call from an owner. The falcon doors now open/close 20% faster after a software update this year. Go test them at a Tesla store, I think they are fast enough now.

Tesla owners need to be reminded again and again by this administration that global warming is a sham, and that their "green energy" runs on our wonderful clean coal.

I seriously don't understand what's all the fuss with Chevy going with EVs, or why Elon Musk works so closely with Trump. Musk has got to go!

Green energy jobs will all disappear within the next ten years, mark my words.

There is no point in arguing about global warming with you, but you should know most people are not buying Tesla's because they are green.

I like the model S but this abomination hurts my eyes.

dpalmo Global warming is real but is a naturally occurring event. Coal can burn clean by introducing a secondary fuel source like corn husks (a waste byproduct) to increase the BTU. This was proven by Ontario Power Generation Nanicoke facility before it was closed down under the asshole, corrupt Liberal Party Green Energy Plan that has quadrupled our electricity costs in 14 years and gutted our manufacturing sector much to the benefit of Mexico and Murica.

The globe warms and the globe cools. This cycle has been happening forever essentially.

You two sound like libertards. THERE IS NO GLOBAL WARMING, just like what Trump says. There is no cycle. That's fake news.

Sorry - BUT you and Trump are indeed wrong - and history has proven that there was BOTH Global Cooling (Ice ages) - as well as global warming. That is not even remotely in question.

What IS in question is whether emissions into the atmosphere from the industrial and auto products and factories contributes much to the change.

Without Global Warming - most people living above the Mason Dixon line would be living in advancing Galciers - possibly in Igloos - since we know that glaciers covered the earth that far in the last Ice Age.

@TomM Some of us rely on science rather than history for such determinations and the science of global warming is that it is a cyclical event and the current global warming is FAR BELOW previous global warming spikes. I know Liberal idiots like you don't like to think or to be bothered with facts.

I don't think you are going to be able to use "science" on this one since 99% of global scientists disagree with you. I will say that it is an irrelevant argument at this point since EVs will dominate regardless of what you or I believe. At minimum we will have cleaner air in major metros, especially LA and the Bay Area.

The trick with SUVs is to make them look like they can go off-road but gradually wean the public into some other kind of lump with decent road handling. Musk got too far ahead in this game.
