OFFICIAL: BMW FINALLY Grants Its Loyal Fans The Wish They've Been Waiting For — FIRST Look At The All-New M8
This week brought an interesting development. BMW officially dropped an all-new concept vehicle on us. Dubbed the 8-Series, it is a follow up to the legendary 1990s big body coupe.

Looking a bit like a Bavarian mated with an Aston Martin Vanquish, it seems to have the Spies split when it comes to liking the design versus being put off by it. But that news was just the start.

That's because today the company revealed that it will be producing a tarted up version. That's right. The BMW M8 is here, well, sort of. While BMW has, predictably, remained mum on critical details, we can see some M details in its design.

Obviously it will have its own unique facade, larger wheels and tires, a big brake kit with blue-painted calipers, a rear lip spoiler and a diffuser element with a quad-tipped exhaust. That shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

What is a bit of a shock though is that BMW is planning on taking this car racing. In its announcement, the company makes it clear there will be an M8 GTE and it will be running at Le Mans. Look for its debut at the Daytona 24 hour race in January 2018.

BMW's press release follows:

The BMW M8 is the icing on the cake of the sporty BMW 8 Series line-up.

Munich, Germany – May 27th, 2017...Alongside the ongoing development of the standard 8 Series, the engineers at BMW M are also working flat out on the M model. A fully camouflaged, early prototype of the future BMW M8 will be unveiled in a driving presentation as part of the support programme for the Nu?rburgring 24-hour race. Classical M features like larger air intakes, modified brakes and a sports exhaust with four tailpipes hint at the significantly boosted power and dynamic potential of the car and whet the appetite for a driving experience of intense emotional richness.

“The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel,” explains Frank van Meel, President BMW M Division. “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”

Development is also underway of a race-spec car – the BMW M8 GTE – to spearhead the return of BMW Motorsport to Le Mans: “The BMW M8 GTE development programme for our Le Mans comeback is in full swing,” says BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still. We can’t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular. We are planning an initial roll-out for the first half of this year and are looking at giving the car its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.”

Regardless of what people think of the concept, it at least has new touches for BMW. The production car appears to have shed 90% of those styling cues and will be another German Pontiac effort.

I miss the concept design already. This is a dumbed down version for sure. Too bad.

This looks totally plain, will be dead on arrival.

BMW is on the wrong track. BMW shouldn't be moving upmarket to compete with MB by introducing a S coupe. Instead, downmarket is really where ALL the money is at.

Just look at Audi. All of our newest models are entry level products. A1, Q1, Q2, Q5, A3, A4. All of these models will ensure that Audi will become the number one luxury brand that it deserves to be, all within two years.

S coupe, Maybach whatever, GT variants, 8 series, i8 roadster. ALL wrong! Downmarket, not upmarket!

@dpalmo Pointing to a brand that is even more featureless for styling than BMW is hilarious.

When's the last time GM has won an award for its designs? Right, never. That's why GM has some of the ugliest cars on the market.

Eat your own words now.

@dpalmo...or should I call you "faceplamo"??? Responding with a non-sequitur (1) rebuts nothing, but (2) make you look like an idiot.

Uh, no. All of those downmarket models will only ensure that Audi will concrete its place as a tremendous Tier 2 luxury brand. Don't get me wrong, entry-level luxury models have a place but the higher-end of the market cannot be neglected. If you really feel that a robust higher-end model offering is wrong, then I'm sorry, but you are just so off base. Mercedes has played this game almost with brilliant perfection and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. While Audi, BMW, and Lexus have twiddled their thumbs and relied on sales of their Entry-level to mid-level products, Mercedes has been running away from them with their higher-end offerings that they just continue to pump out. Not to mention, the incredible competence of these higher-end models continues to improve their image as the Tier 1 leaders in prestige and that trickles down to the rest of the line and to the sales numbers.
It scares me that in reference to Audi you say "our", which tells me you probably work for them. Do you really want your company to be a Tier 2 brand?

dpalmo: I'm an Audi Q5 driver, and as much as I love my car, I would not argue that it's the best, or even an example of where Audi should go. As much as Audi has tried, and even though they brag about their uninterrupted 6+ year month-over-month unit sales increases, they still lag behind Mercedes and BMW in unit sales. They always have.

This is not a slam of Audi. Rather, it just point out that BMW (and Mercedes) continue to do an awful lot right! Even though *I* don't care for this specific BMW vehicle, I have no doubt that BMW, as a brand, will continue to do great things, make noteworthy cars, and will likely continue to be seen as "above Audi" for the foreseeable future.

It reminds me of the yawner 6-series.

Of course it reminds you of a 6-Series. It's a mildly refreshed 6-Series with a new badge.

Also, this clown dpalmo has already worn out his welcome and he's only been here 15 minutes.

Ugh. My worst fear. I said I really liked the 8 Series concept, but BMW would have to stay pretty faithful to that design to keep my interest. This camo'd model is what I feared. Oh,well.

This will be dead on arrival. BMW's concepts look nothing like the production models and the same is true here. The 8-Series Concept looks more like an Aston Martin while the production model looks a lot like the existing 6-Series.

BMW's sales are far behind Mercedes-Benz both in the U.S. market and globally. A slightly tweaked 6-Series isn't going to help it catch up anytime soon.

Wow, some pretty harsh criticism of a car still in camo! Think I'll reserve judgement until it's finished...

Yeah, you're totally correct. Taking the camo off will somehow undo the ungainly proportions and this will be the most stunning car of all automotive history.
