SUV WARS! KBB Puts Together A Motley Crew: MDX vs. XC90 vs. QX60 vs. Range Rover Sport vs. Q7

As we've been reporting for what seems like an eternity, the wonderful world of luxury sport utility vehicles is a crowded one. Whether you're looking a compact SUV or a big daddy, your decision is not going to be an easy one.

And if you've got some jingle and you need a third row, be prepared.

The folks over at Kelley Blue Book recently got a group together to do some back-to-back testing. Consisting of the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60, Range Rover Sport and Volvo XC90, it sure is a motley crew.

Having said that, to me there's a couple class-leading picks here. While the others are certainly good products, they're not great.

I happen to like NONE of the vehicles because by going one level down to the Highlander/Explorer/Pilot level, you get the "same" vehicle with the same options for less and the also look better. The MDX and XC90 are as dull and boring as they can be. The QX60 is so obviously badged engineered Nissan Pathfinder garbage. The RR wears played-out styling that the long-in-tooth Evoque introduced. And the Audi? Sorry. I'm not into cars for old farts.

That Volvo is just ugly as sin and technologically inferior to the majestic Q7.

Too bad they didn't include the GLE and the Escalade. Audi would have schooled them both. Such sad little cars!

They left out the best vehicle and the dominate seller the Lexus RX350....

It's a segment below these. Plus, it does not have a third row. If your are searching for a family luxury SUV, the Lexus IS out. It's meant for empty nesters and retirees.

If they included the RR Sport, they should have included the GLS which starts at a similar price.

From this group, at around $55k, I'd choose the XC90 or MDX. The QX60 design is flimsy and its interior design is a decade behind. The Q7 is overrated, bloated, and reminds me of a modern evolution of the first Mazda MPV.

My suspicion is they would compare the GLE, which has not had a major update since 2011 - possibly why they excluded it. I'm sure they will have some updated SUV header once the new body is released with the updated technology.
