The Rolls-Royce Sweptail Cost HOW MUCH? You Won't Believe It Until You See It...
The BMW-hosted Concours d'Elegance held in Italy at Villa d'Este is usually a big-time event; however, it seems that this year was relatively quiet. Really, the only news came from Rolls-Royce and BMW.

That's it.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail

Maybe it had something to do with Jim Glickenhaus too busy fielding a team racing around the Nürburgring, or a year without any Zagatos. Long story short, the Roller announcement was a blockbuster. That's because it does two things:

1) It's the signal of a new era for Rolls-Royce as the company says it may begin exploring doing more one-off project cars, like the Sweptail; and,

2) The Sweptail now is thought to be the most expensive new vehicle produced. While there hasn't been an official dollar amount tagged to the project, the rumors swirling around Lake Como seem to indicate $12.8 million for the four-year project car.

See the excerpt from CAR's sit down interview with Roller's head honcho and the detailed video clip that takes you through what may be the world's most expensive new vehicle to ever be sold.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail

Excerpts from CAR's sit down with Rolls-Royce's CEO follows:

...The Sweptail has been hailed as Rolls-Royce's return to creating bespoke cars, but creating them can be difficult on a platform that already exists.

Torsten hints at Rolls-Royce making future platforms more accessible for unique coachbuilding to be performed on them; ‘In theory [we can] because our decision is to go aluminium spaceframe architecture only, and that is the kind of technology that allows, in principle, doing stuff like that.’ He was however, keen to stress that this would need further investigation before allowing any future customers to get too excited about ordering their own unique car...

...So how much is the Sweptail? Torsten neglected to give even a ballpark figure, but did say ‘it was substantially expensive. Substantially expensive. You can easily say that this is probably the most expensive new car in ages… ever...'

Pretty unique Rolls Royce One-Off at the Villa D'Este Concorso. Rumored to cost nearly 12.8 million dollars and four years of design and planning to build. This is an official Rolls Royce car and not built by a coachbuilder or third party.

*cough* you want me to pay how many millions for a 2007 dodge caliber's taillights, a hatchback rear end inspired by a yacht for a car that cant even float?

Maybach Please...make that 2 one in V-12 form the other in V-8 to reduce my carbon footprint....

Some folks have money to burn, so this is inconsequential to them. Some of these folks also have a need to make sure others know that they have a mountain of money, and a car like this is just one way of doing that.

It is indeed a lot of money to commission a car that comes out looking just like a Wraith with a glass roof and a goofy trunk. Better off to buy the Wraith, a Range Rover and a DB11 and call it a day.

Is there any wet concrete this can be driven into? Given its weight, I'm sure it would sink fast.

RR is so far behind Bentley in design and prestige nowadays I don't even know why they bother anymore.

Where's that elegance RR used to have back in the 80s?

Even Audi A8 looks better than any RR model on the market.

And Maybach? A complete joke of a brand, sub-brand, or a whatever badgewhores would call that POS.

1 - The Audi A8 looks like an Audi A3 -from 10 years ago - and certainly not anywhere near the RR. THey all look like OLD Pontiac knockoffs - just terrible.

2 - A commissioned project car likely has styling that was specified by the buyer - I doubt RR would actually produce this car themselves. However - the car is stunning - and probably is one you have to see in person.

3 - Maybach is a trim level now - not a separate styling. People with money know this.

4 - Bentley styling is mired in the past - the Mulsanne needed a complete redo - not a "freshening". The rest of the line looks suspiciously like an Old Chrysler TC in the front.

Im sorry, rolls royce elegance of the 80s?? Yes, lucas electronics and gm switchgear is the first thing i think of when i hear the word elegance.

Bro, i know you you are an audi/vw fanboy and all, and thats all good because i am a porsche fanboy but some of your recent comments have been pretty far fetched. "Audi a8 is a better design than anything from rolls royce". That's completely ridiculous. The audi a8 is the "beige" of the large luxury sedan sector. I am not saying by any means that audi is a crap brand but your comparisons are frankly, blasphemous.

And one other thing... for you to call anyone else a badgewhore is definitely the pot calling the kettle black .

A Mulsanne Speed would have been a much better choice for this buyer. Brilliant. Understated. Powerful. Rare. And not a goofy line on it. 4.9sec to 100km and 305kph top speed. Takes 4 to dinner + the ballet quite nicely.

You have missed the point entirely. The buyer was not looking for a High performance car. And they CERTAINLY were not looking for something Understated either.

They were looking for a High End Exclusive car - that nobody else had. Something to be SEEN in. They obviously had the money to afford what they wanted - and they got it custom made by the highest end Luxury Sedan Maker. Anybody - with enough money - can buy a Bentley speed - even the Riffraff. Rolls Royce - on the other hand - does not produce one off bodies all that often.

I like the boldness of the design. It is not a complete success, however the interior is a leap ahead.

I'm kinda speechless....

From the inside - looking out, the special coach-built RR is simply stunning. However, the exterior is very uniquely "styled" such that only the owner will generally love. God-speed & happy motoring.
