Chinese Quality Is At The SAME Level As The Germans, So Your NEXT BMW May Come From China
BMW Group has been granted a license by Chinese authorities to export vehicles manufactured by its local joint venture BMW Brilliance, opening up the possibility of China-built BMWs being sold to customers in Europe or the U.S.

German premium automakers have steadily expanded production in China at their joint ventures with local companies but plans to export vehicles so far have not been on the agenda, in part because cars from China have a poor reputation for safety and reliability in Western markets.

BMW now believes the quality of cars produced in China has reached the level of those built in Germany or the U.S.

My understanding is that Chinese manufacturing runs the gamut: On one hand, every iPhone made comes out of China, as do some Denon audio-visual receivers, but on the other hand, so do a plethora of obvious knock-off products. And take a look at the Chinese auto industry and you'll see something more akin to products from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) than from Stuttgart. I personally know people who took their production to China and had reject rates (which they had to pay for) of over 40%.

I hold the opinion that you can *potentially* get high-quality production of *some* products from China, but to do so, you better figure out the "magic key" that unlocks that formula.

On a similar note, customers are taking delivery of the new second-generation Audi Q5s from the new plant in Mexico. Audi forums now have threads from new Q5 owners complaining about quality problems and delivery delays where the dealer sites "they had to fix some things."

Some countries do not yet have a solid reputation for producing quality products. China is one of them.

China makes both shit and quality. We here in North America get all the cheap Wally world crap because Westerners love cheap crap. Europe is a lot more quality conscious and gets the gooder stuff.

Many industries are totally screwed when it comes to Chinese labor. Our Only savior is automation which can't come fast enough. This of course is dependent on quality programming, quality machinery and cheap electricity -the later of screws Ontario.

Ironically I have been able to have high quality parts fabricated for me cheaper than China by Amish and Mennonites whom have no power to the house or barn but full CNC workshops with fiber lasers, mill presses and 5D axis machinery. This has allowed me to stay competitive to the offshore crap in my particular market niche and still be manufacturing in North America as the rest of my industry has gone offshore.

I'm off to Shanghai next month to see first hand what is coming down the turnpike at a huge trade show as sadly resistance may be futile long term if China keeps improving QC.

There is NO WAY, I would ever purchase a Chinese made BMW. Period!

The Chinese will own BMW, so you may need to rethink that.

They are also in the process of owning America. We are in debt up to our elbows to them.

You do realize Chinese BMWs share the same design as German ones, right?

IT is Obvious that the problem is not that China has produced better Quality - but that German BMWs are worse than before. Most BMWs are cars that are good lease cars at best - and fall apart soon afterwards. THey are known for cheap parts substitutions - and poor interiors that have various problems as well.

AS far as owning the USA -there was a time we thought that Japan would do that - and they tried hard - but stagnant home economies are hard to overcome. That along with the loss of the consumer electronic market to Korea and Singapore - eventually caught up with a lot of formerly high riding Japanese businesses - an example is the loss of the Photographic Industry - which a number of manufacturers went belly up/

If Chinese auto quality is up to par... why would it need to be a bmw that you buy and not some Chinese car? If Japan and Korea can produce cars with decent quality so can anyone else. As long as there is will to make it happen.

The formula for quality Chinese manufacturing has been found long ago by the Japanese: relentless supervision and education. Cheap made in China products that sell in Japan under Japanese brands—yes, even sub $5 umbrellas—are higher quality than than you’d typically see in a product selling for $35 elsewhere.
